I know the Nokia E71 isn't on the supported phone list for SlingPlayer but I though I'd try it out anyway. It works on the E90 after all.

For anyone interested the application installs fine but then none of the menu items or dialog boxes can be seen so it's impossible to configure anything. Even if it was possible to set it up I can't guarantee you'd be able to see  the video feed.

If anyone from SlingMedia is reading this please add the E71 to the supported phones :) I'd be more than happy to beta test anything. The E71 is an amazingly good phone, the build quality is excellent and it's very fast for a S60 device.

I had same problem on my new E71 mobile. Any tip to wrok around??

The E71 was too late to make our last product update for the Symbian S60 client which released a few months ago. We have received a number of requests for it and it will probably be part of the next S60 update. I can't promise it will, but the odds seem good.

However, right now we're focused on the Blackberry and iPhone clients. And, unlike an update coming for WinMob 6.1, the work required for the E71 is more extensive so it isn't something we pop out quickly.

The Symbian UIQ client work has completely and it is being prepared for release. UIQ has *huge* demand in some countries. The mobile market is like that, some countries UIQ is unheard of, others UIQ is a leading platform.

Symbian S60 is the same way, big in some areas, not so popular in others.

Does this mean that Sling was officially accepted into the Apple Developer Program?

How long till we get sling for E71

August 26, 2008 11:16 AM

We're not announcing any time frame yet, but as I said above there are a few other project in the pipeline that will probably need to finish before the next S60 update is done. So it will probably be a little while yet, not something we'll see in a matter of weeks.

Watch live TV on your Nokia e71 with the Hava Mobile Player. Yes folks, Hava HAS an S60rev3 client and IT WORKS on the e71 great!

Kept my Slings and added a Hava Titanium HD to my network as well. Forget the Hava wireless setup, doesn't work but ethernet connection does (after the update). Went through wizard and it configured Hava for remote viewing. Installed the S60 client on the e71, it connected on first try! Quality was good.

Give it a try if you want a Sling style experience on your new toy!

Check it out at myhava.com. Its a sling-clone, not as polished (I wouldn't use the PC based player because the SlingPlayer and quality is better). But for live TV on the e71, it's the only game in town and it works VERY WELL (on AT&T's 3G network). I think quality is on par with SlingPlayer Mobile on the Windows Mobile devices.

A working and very acceptable solution until sling gets their act together and realizes how well the e71 is selling WORLDWIDE (sales stats are amazing according to my friend's corporate distributor rep- he's an IT buyer at a fortune 500).

Herre is a link to a demo video running on another S60 rev 3 device:

You have to buy a hava box. For the wired version (similar to the SOLO), you can get it for as little $99. My plan is to sell it on eBay when and if sling releases a client update for the e71. For now, it's a great stop gap and sure helps pass the time on those long train rides!

Unlike sling, the Hava mobile clients are FREE.

Do anybody know is Hava all so available in Europe and PAL system?
If Slingmedia don't want make mobile player for E71 I need change to other brand!

Can you lot go and discuss Hava elsewhere?!?

This is about Slingbox s/w update release for the E71. You're diluting the thread. Thanks

No what we are doing is expressing our frustration with no E71 support. if they dont want to hear it, get support for the E71

Use the Hava website and associated forums (if any). Slingmedia could monitor this thread and quite rightly assume that E71 users will just switch to Hava. No skin off their nose now is it. Like I say you are diluting the purpose of this thread. What is to stop you discussing on Hava's website as well as this one.

This is the perfect forum for this discussion. As a result of this discussion and some luck, maybe SlingMedia will see that there are vocal e71 SlingBox owners out there ready to fork over $29.95 and accelerate development (it shouldn't take much to modify the n95 version for the e71, I'm a Symbian developer and don't really see what the big deal is to adjust for the landscape orientation? Either they have a real manpower shortage or there is some other issue internally- shouldn't take more than a couple of days IMO).

Obviously without a compatible Sling version, it just means more Hava boxes are being sold and used, which is competitive to Sling and something they shouldn't want.

The e71 is selling very well, especially in Europe. There are rumors, AT&T will start offering it over here shortly. I would expect anyone considering a BlackJack II would immediately consider purchasing an e71 instead after seeing it. That will just mean more e71's sold, more Slingbox owners who can't use it with there PDA, and a greater demand.

The thread is fine, but honestly it is not likely to make a difference in the plans. The mobile developers are focused on Blackberry and iPhone, and the WinMob update, and we're not likely to pull resources off to work on an S60 update. And to release it it is more than quick development, it needs to be tested internally and then beta tested with users. We can't just make a quick fix and release it as a commercial product. All of our resources are currently allocated to other projects.

The E71 is popular in Europe, but we don't have as large a concentration of users there yet. So the concentration of E71 owning Slingbox users isn't that high. And in the US, where we have most of our users, S60 only has around 7% of the market - and since the E71 isn't carried by a carrier in the US, it isn't common here yet. It is just the reality of the situation, Series60 is a smaller percentage of our mobile users and the E71 is a very small number of those users, hot or not.

We've already talked about it, and the E71 will *probably* be in the next S60 update. But that won't happen until the resources are available. And Blackberry and iPhone are much hotter projects, and WinMob is, by far, the dominant mobile platform for our users.

We'd love to be able to do updates for every new model of phone as they come out, but that's just not possible. It will just take time.

A source at AT&T has confirmed they will offer an AT&T branded version of the Nokia e71 for the US in multiple colors shortly (silver, black, white, and red). I doubt that will make any difference to Sling. However the market for an e71 based SlingPlayer should increase substantially very shortly.
