I know the Nokia E71 isn't on the supported phone list for SlingPlayer but I though I'd try it out anyway. It works on the E90 after all.

For anyone interested the application installs fine but then none of the menu items or dialog boxes can be seen so it's impossible to configure anything. Even if it was possible to set it up I can't guarantee you'd be able to see  the video feed.

If anyone from SlingMedia is reading this please add the E71 to the supported phones :) I'd be more than happy to beta test anything. The E71 is an amazingly good phone, the build quality is excellent and it's very fast for a S60 device.

I guess Im going to switch to Hava.
Was just frustrated this morning when I bought the sling box, set it all up only to find out that I cannot view it on my E71.
Slingbox just lost another customer.....

Try not to shoot the messenger, but I thought I'd let you know it doesn't look like we'll have an S60 update this year. The rest of the year for SPM looks like BlackBerry, iPhone, and a WinMob update (for new resolutions). S60 is pending but hasn't been slotted yet.

okay that made it. Moving to Hava and cancling my SC orders.

SlingMedia just gone from Stupid to Worse. I am amazed. Tweaking the S60 platform to work on all versions is such a little task....

Sorry, it's just development priorities. There is just far more demand for the other platforms so they're receiving attention first. I know it probably doesn't matter when it is your phone that isn't the priority.

? I can understand you want your iPhone version out.. But WiMo ? That is ONLY because there are a few HighRes mobiles you want to support. But it seems like Sling does not know its stats? - SmartPhone stats - there are 47% S60 phones world wide vs 11% WinMo...

October 3, 2008 1:58 AM updated: October 3, 2008 2:00 AM

And in the countries where we sell Slingboxes? More WinMob.

We don't sell Slingboxes in most of the countries where S60 dominates, or we've only just begun to and so don't have a lot of users. Obviously the vast majority of our users are in the US, and WinMob trounces Symbian in the US.

Generic market stats isn't the issue, it is our usage stats. We just don't have anywhere near as many Symbian users. BlackBerry will probably outstrip Symbian quickly after it is released for similar reasons.

We get more requests for things like the Treo 800w, Treo Pro, Sony X1, HTC Touch HD, etc, than we do E71 - by a wide margin.

haha okay. US actually have a lot higher penetration of s60 smartphone platform than WinMo as well.

but anyway. You can messure you demand based on current usage. Since you software today works on ALL WinMo I have tried it on - but only on 10% of S60 - your usage stats are greatly wrong.

I have not had a WinMo that did not work with slingplayer. So why the need for another new version?

But you have 90% of S60 where it does not work..

So to get your stats right - you need to factor in the platforms where Sling does NOT work when you do the usage stats.

But this seems like it is an internal image thing for sling.. X1, Touch HD got high res screens. Sling works on them - but does not look uptimal. I have Thouch Pro and sling works fine on that with 640x480 screen. But could be better - but it works....

Where as on S60 - it does not work on 90% at all.

Top four smartphone platforms in terms of sales in the US currently - BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm OS, WinMob. S60 has a small fraction of the US market, Symbian has never had much success in the US. They aren't carried by two of the four major carriers at all.

As for WinMob working on more phones, that's because the platform is more unified than Symbian is. There is much less tweaking to get it working on specific models of phone with WinMob. Symbian phones have more variations in hardware.

And keep in mind may S60 phones aren't candidates for SPM at all. Lower end S60 phones don't have the hardware for it. S60 gets used on different grades of phone, and only the higher end phones have any chance of seeing SPM support. So the comparison isn't appropriate, the system requirements for WinMob pretty much dictate that all the phones using it will be higher end and capable of running apps like SPM.

as pr. april 2008 Nokia had 7% US marketshare - and iPhone less than 2% and WiMo 11%

October 3, 2008 2:56 AM

Sounds like installed market share, I was talking new sales share. But even then WinMob has more than Symbian. (I'm presuming all the Nokia phones are Symbian.)

kaz are you thick? Basically only the NSeries and ESeries are capable of running SPM. Those phones are typically owning available in the states unlocked, thus unsubsidized and consequently unsold!

95% of that 7% marketshare is in the phones like the Nokia 1200 and ones where a "color-screen" is listed as a feature!

I want SPM on an E71 too, but trying to win this argument is just stupid. Megazone is right.

October 3, 2008 2:59 AM

No - 95% is NOT 1200.. actually since N95 Nokias share in the US has risen. Sales figures of N95 is HIGHER than iPhone....

October 3, 2008 3:00 AM

Thanks. That's why I was specifying *smartphone* market share. Most S60 phones aren't even candidates for SPM.

October 3, 2008 8:21 AM

....and as a consequence Hava is gaining a wider market base from symbian customers.

Have ordered in my Hava and the slingbox is going back to futureshop.

I advise the same for all symbian phone owners who are having issues with slingplayer not providing enough support for symbian phones...

October 3, 2008 8:29 AM

Yea i have been following this thread since it started and after hearing this news its time to switch over to Hava. I have the first slingbox that was released so it was about time for an upgrade anyway. As long as the quality is th3e same or better im fine.

October 3, 2008 12:15 PM

MegaZone, Thanks for the info you provide, I appreciate it. The news about no S60 update does stink though. I have had my slingbox just collecting dust for the last 6 months. I know S60 smartphones are not too popular in the US. People are obsessed with the flip phones for some reason. Also, I know a lot of US carriers don't carry S60 phones unless they cripple the features of them. So I think the US S60 users in this country may be skewed slightly, I upgrade to the junk American phone every 2 years, but I just sell it on ebay and then buy myself an unlocked good smartphone. So the statistics show that I do have a blackberry or winmo phone, however I use a S60 phone and nobody knows about it. I know when I show the features of my Nokia to the general public they are amazed at some of its features. Heck, over half of the American public thinks bluetooth is simply the headset and know nothing about its wireless transfer capabilities (because when you buy a branded phone the bluetooth is usually disabled).
