I know the Nokia E71 isn't on the supported phone list for SlingPlayer but I though I'd try it out anyway. It works on the E90 after all.

For anyone interested the application installs fine but then none of the menu items or dialog boxes can be seen so it's impossible to configure anything. Even if it was possible to set it up I can't guarantee you'd be able to see  the video feed.

If anyone from SlingMedia is reading this please add the E71 to the supported phones :) I'd be more than happy to beta test anything. The E71 is an amazingly good phone, the build quality is excellent and it's very fast for a S60 device.

I hate to admit it but I think you have to switch to hava. though im not totally satisified with it it is the best thing you have available. if sling.com comes on line that may be a possibility.. am i right mega?

I don't *think* Sling.com web-based SlingPlayer will work from a phone, but that whole project is being run out of out NYC office and I work out of the Foster City, CA office (currently WAY out, I live in Worcester, MA but am working on moving to CA) so I've really only had the same exposure as any beta tester.

I understand the frustration and I've experienced it myself in the past. Go back a while and you'll find old posts from me as a user asking when Palm OS was going to be supported, because that was the main thing keeping me from buying a Slingbox in the first place. I finally jumped on-board when Palm OS went into beta. My personal phone is still a Treo 680.

And now I'm seriously thinking of jumping onto Android, which is also not supported by Sling at this time.

Right now I had a Nokia N95 which I had for the last S60 update beta, which I ran earlier this year. As well as a Motorola Q9c (WinMob Smartphone) and a Treo 700wx (WinMob Pro). If, for some reason, Palm OS vanished tomorrow I'm not sure what I'd go with. Android is what I'd like to use, but I want to see what kind of support it gets - I need things like Exchange support for work, and I'd like to see PC syncing. Both have been left to 3rd parties. And really I'd like to see more of the hardware hit so I have some choices.

I might actually go with RIM. I've honestly not liked BlackBerries to date. In my last job I was IT Director and some execs had them, and I've played with them before that, but they just didn't appeal to me somehow. Something about the OS. But the new models like the Bold really look like a big improvement and I'm waiting to get my hands on one to see how it 'feels'.

On the WinMob side, it has come so very far from the first WinCE devices I played with. And Palm has done some nice things to their models to improve the user experience, the Treo Pro looks like a nice phone - but I still have enough dislike for WinMob that it probably wouldn't be my choice. Maybe WinMob7 will finally do it.

My personal experience with Symbian has pretty much been with the N95, and I was a little frustrated with it. For me a smartphone has to have a real QWERTY keyboard, same main issue I have with the iPhone. I use my Treo more for email and text than voice. So the N95 definitely isn't for me. Maybe some other S60 phone would be more appealing. The OS itself was OK, but didn't grab me in any particular way.

I think for me the two real contenders today would be Android and RIM. But I'll stick with Palm OS for a little while as I wait to see how Android shapes up in the market. At this point I have no faith left in Palm OS II/Nova.

Is the video gonna be converted to flash when played in sling.com?

I believe it uses a browser plug-in.

I did check, it is a browser plug-in. I don't know if it would work in Skyfire or any other browser - I believe there are two versions, one for Firefox (NSAPI) and one for IE (which I think is ActiveX - I use Firefox).

There is another possibility, but as a Sling employee I really can't recommend looking at possible 3rd parties doing unauthorized mobile clients...

As a owner of 2 x Slingbox, I'm really frustrated on the S60 support. Does Hava support E71? I am considering to buy one and trash the 2 slingboxes. Slingbox is losing another customer again.

I'll take it off you so I can use it on my home network. Could do with a spare.

Failing that, make sure you are supervised by a responsible adult, as we dont want you hurting yourself Laughing.

I think I have deleted it as no longer relevant due to Slingmedia's response, which I am happy with as they have a business to run etc. Will check later.

You never know, they may still incorporate E71 in a future update.

Which is when?

I have ordered in my Hava which is firstly much cheaper than sling and heck they dont even charge for the symbian player.

sling should learn from them.

We're not giving a time frame for the next S60 update just yet, but it won't be before the end of the year.

I was told a few months ago that there was going to be E71 support included in the fall release. Now there isn't?

Unreal. This device is more than capable of playing Sling video. I can't imagine porting to the E71 as a tremendous task. A few lines of code I suspect...but Sling can't do it? I realize you are busy writing a program for the blockbuster Jesus Phone, but for heaven's sake, edit some code to get the program to work on the E71.

I guess I'll have to check out this hava thing as well. Shame, really, but it sounds like Sling is caught up in the iPhone trance like the rest of the world.

Money talks, I suppose.
