Very disappointed to find out today that E71 is not support after receiving my phone today. will be doing everything possible to try and get Sling to realize that they need to get there act together and support the latest technology.
I know the Nokia E71 isn't on the supported phone list for SlingPlayer but I though I'd try it out anyway. It works on the E90 after all.
For anyone interested the application installs fine but then none of the menu items or dialog boxes can be seen so it's impossible to configure anything. Even if it was possible to set it up I can't guarantee you'd be able to see the video feed.
If anyone from SlingMedia is reading this please add the E71 to the supported phones :) I'd be more than happy to beta test anything. The E71 is an amazingly good phone, the build quality is excellent and it's very fast for a S60 device.
forget it....its not gonna make a difference.
Better to switch to Hava, its much cheaper and heck they wont even charge for the mobile player.
And its the same in functionality if not better....
Buy a Hava!! Let sling make software for the toys. I just watched Monday Night Football last night on my E71 via Hava! It was awesome and it's free for the player so when I get new S60 cell phones I won't have to pay 30 dollars for a player every time.

If you get a new phone you can just reuse the same license - activating it on a new device deactivates it on the old one. You don't have to keep buying it over and over.

Got the n95 when it came out. Loved my Slingplayer. Got my e71 when they came out. Been waiting for support. I am done with slingbox. I am looking into alternatives to slingbox since they don't care to support the best phone out there. I will keep you posted.
Being a Sling user for 3 years I'm very disapointed with the lack of support on the E71
I cannot believe you guys have such backward philosophy. I understand you update software in waves and dedicate IT resources per device platforms, but to not be able to relatively quickly adjust the Sling Player to a device on the same S60 Symbian platform is in my opinion lack of business intelligence. For you MegaZone to go out and reason with people how UIQ is big in some markets and less so in others has zero relevance to me. I don't care. If SlingMedia say they support s60 Symbian then it should never come to me getting an S60 phone and realising that the software does not work. Sling should say we support these Nokia phones: X Y Z. Currently you say Symbian S60 3rd platform supported and
We have always had a list of supported phones on the site. We support specific platforms and specific models within those platforms. It is unlikely that we will ever support *every* phone on a given platform, because there will always be models that have some specific issue. In broad terms we only support models with 3G or WiFi connections, so there are many GSM/EDGE-only phones that we simply do not, and will never, support. That's just one example.
We know people are going to be upset by the lack of support for this model or that model, and if we had infinite resources it wouldn't be an issue. But the real world fact is that we can't do everything at once and have to prioritize, and that means we just have to accept some upset users because we just can't make everyone happy all the time - as much as we'd like to. None of us enjoy telling users "Sorry, you'll have to wait", and we certainly don't enjoy taking abuse for circumstances we can't control. But that's part of the job.
If we did S60 then those resources would have to come from something else, like WinMob or iPhone, and so S60 users would be happy but someone else would be upset because they're platform would have more delay.

Mega-
In the time it took you to write those paragraphs, a programmer could have modified the sling mobile player software to work on the E71.
You said "there are many GSM/EDGE-only phones that we simply do not, and will never, support."
Um, I am watching my Slingbox right now on my N82, a mode that is GSM/EDGE only in the US. Since the US is the major market for sling, why do you support this model and not the US 3G model E71-2?
Seriously. We pay a lot of money for your equipment. Make it work. The E71 isn't an obscure mobile device.

i believe earlier in this thread, or in another one, the reason given for the delay in a newer series 60 client is to support UIQ. you realize of course, that UIQ was just dropped by Sony-Ericsson as a mobile platform, leaving only a few completely obscure and yet to be released motorola devices left as the only phones that actually use this operating system. this has to be one of the dumbest product management decisions i've seen in a while.
megazone is of course just doing his job, but even his excuses are starting to lose their credulity, and seem slightly tinged with embarassment.
while of course we all understand we can't have support for every device, as a professional software developer who works for one of the 10 largest ISVs in the world, who actively supports mobile platforms, it doesn't explain the terrible prioritization of development resources. any experienced symbian developer could make a few minor tweaks and re-compile the existing client for the e71 in literally a matter of minutes. in fact, if they released the source, we'd have a fix tommorow.
the excuse for the iphone being prioritized as a development platform is ridiculous- apple completely controls their application marketplace, and based on their history of censorship and control (they wouldn't allow a developer to release a streaming podcasting application? don't hold your breath for slingplayer) not to mention competive products, and ATT's role in network optimization (no laptop tethering, forget network intensive media streaming) i'll personally bet anyone here a hundred dollars that we won't see slingplayer for the iphone for at least 6 months, and probably never. in fact, its already been shown, and its probably done, but its quite likely that sling has been put on ice by apple indefinitely.
these products are early adopter products, they create evangelists and reference sales- think tivo. early adopters adopt new technologies across the board, which also means we'e got the latest mobile devices. i've personally got two new hd pro's and a catcher- don't even get me started on how buggy the catcher is, but the point is that sling is dropping the ball on their mobile support, which is alienating their best customers.
the current windows mobile client is terrible, it doesn't even support the new screen resolutions for 6.1 devices that have been out for a year.
i currently have an e71, an iphone, a moto q9h (one of my favorite devices ever), a new samsung epix and a bold. guess what? slingplayer mobile only works on one of those devices.
would i personally care so much if sling gave away the mobile client? no- but that fact that they're charging for it, and not updating/supporting it means i'm buying a Hava this week just to see how it works with the winmo and symbian devices.
Add another voice to the calls for the Slingplayer to be updated for use on the E71.
Ridiculous! It would be so easy for them to update the software for the E71. I don't think Nokia is gonna like this but I just bought a new phone and it isn't a Nokia. My buddy who was going to switch from a Treo to a E71 is no longer going to buy a Nokia.
Just purchased a Hava Wireless HD $179. The Gold version is $99 but I think the wireless is worth it. The mobile player is FREE. The only drawback is that they do not support Macintosh at this time. But I only use it on my phone so not an issue for me.

It works with the E71. The only issue is that the mobile player does not allow it to play in Full Screen Mode. The developers have responded to this by stating it will be fixed in the next software version.
I don't know how it is going to work but I will keep you posted if Sling doesn't delete my account. LOL.
The E71 is the most competent mobile phone that I know. I am an avid mac fan with a number of machines at home and at work, but I still have not moved to an iPhone (I have an iPod Touch) because the E71 is more competent phone in the right ways e.g. easier keyboard, FM radio. This is why I am adding my vote to have Slingplayer Mobile developed for the E71.
Thank you in anticipation. John
I suppose those of us who have Slingbox should check this website first before ordering a cell phone?
I had an iPhone for the last two years and have been waiting patiently for Sling to come out with an iPhone version. My husband has the N95 and has been enjoying Slingbox for months.
I looked at Nokias and fell in LOVE with the E71.
I now have two phones and Sling will not work on either.
I completely disagree with Sling. The E71 is VERY popular on the US market. Everyone at work has one or is in the process of ordering one after seeing mine.
Is it really THAT hard to support E71? It already downloads the application. Just needs some resizing.
One would think this economy would be a great motivator! Does Sling have more money than they care to make?
Please, please, please support the E71!

I always check to see if applications I depend on are supported on a new phone before I buy that phone. Or at least if something that offers equivalent features is available for the new phone. For me the applications are more important than the phone, it just needs to provide a good platform. I've decided not to buy phones in the past because of application compatibility issues.
And, as I've said repeatedly, it is just a matter of resources. We can't do everything at once. It isn't complex. It doesn't matter how many resources a Symbian update would take, there aren't any resources available for the work at this time. The simple fact is BlackBerry and iPhone are higher priority development efforts at this time and the bulk of our mobile developers are working on those programs, with some effort going into a Windows Mobile update which should be coming soon.
It is a zero sum game, we could do an update for Symbian if we pulled resources off another project, slowing that project down. The decision was made not to do that. And we accept that some users will not be happy with the decision, but other users would not be happy with more delays to the other releases either. No matter what we do someone is not going to be happy because they'll have an increased wait. We can't do anything about it. We'd love to make everyone happy all of the time, but we can't. And we realize that means some users may look for alternative solutions.
We'd love to have the resources to be able to whip up new releases for every new phone that appears, and to be able to support additional platforms, but the economic and business reality is that we can't just build a team that large. We're growing the team, but we have to do it in a way that is sustainable for the business.
There will always be phones we don't support. In the case of the E71 the timing was bad, it hit too late to make our last Symbian S60 update cycle earlier this year and we haven't come back around to do another S60 update since it released. It was just out of phase with our update cycles, and our engineering resources are committed to the other projects now so S60 will be revisited once resouces are available.
