I'm currently living in Japan and was talking to another guy about using Slingbox here.

He was saying that all I'd need was to have my host in the states, who has DirecTV, set up the slingbox; then I could change channels, and record on my personal HTPC here in Japan, which has to be done since the 13hr difference puts shows off schedule from us.

I was reading on here that ppl are setting up DirecTV DVR/TiVo on the host, then streaming...instead of streaming then recording.

So my question is, which way does it need to be for the Slingbox to work properly? Do I need my host to set up a DVR for me to stream off of, or can I set up my own dvr to record the streams?

If the DVR needs to be with the host, is the software on my end smart enough to let me browse through recorded material on the DVR?

Your host in the states sets it up to any audio/video source (with the Pro, you get a built in tuner so it can also be set up to access cable straight from the wall without interrupting any body elses tv viewing). The Slingbox comes with an IR blaster and "built in"remote control The IR blaster sets infront of the device and you press your remote on the slingplayer which sends the signal to the device. So you would access and/or record just like you would with the real remote.

so if my host set up a regular directv box, I could use my HTPC to schedule and record anything we wanted?

Yes, but the HTPC needs to be with the host.   Although it is possible to record the Sling stream on a PC, it is much better and easier to do the recording at the host end and then access the DVR remotely with Slingplayer.
