I've seen the Youtube, I've seen Zatz talk about it but yet here we are in July '08 with no Slingcatcher release date.

My conspiracy theory - Sling(and/or Dish) is under pressure to put out a crippled device. The sports leagues or movie studios or whoever are possibly scared of people misusing the catcher.

Sounds ludicrous but makes sense. Look how the RIAA went after XM and Sirius for devices that simply recorded songs on a device and you couldn't even 'share' the content!

Slingcather sounds very cool....but also sounds pretty simple to execute.

Given the long delays you have to wonder what's really up here. There's a lot of demand for this item - only something out of the ordinary can be holding this up.

 Just my 2 cents!

I would have to not agree with this conspiracy theory. Not that I have any more info than you do, but what the catcher does you can mostly do already. I just makes it easier to do so.

As Matt said at the end of this article.

Of course, this level of functionality isn’t anything you can’t do already. It’s already possible to connect a personal computer to television, but there’s something to be said about the simplicity of SlingCatcher. It will make getting a computer connected to a TV easier than ever before, and could even provide some new remote streaming solutions down the road.

I would not agree. I just think the company is being arrogant, and doesn't care about what its customers want...there seems to be no sense of urgency to bring these enhancements to market.

no slingcatcher, no blackberry client, no iphone client, no dedicated linux client, no slingclient 2.0 player... Where are these things? How many years will we have to wait for them?

Ever since the acquisition, there has been very little info, and a whole lot of pr spin. I'm not holding my breath for anything. Time to start looking for other products that fit the bill...

Brandon - I think we are essentially in agreement. I'm saying - hey, this thing is not rocket science. However, if we're right that the device is pretty easy to put together, there must be some legal murkiness or threats coming in from the outside.

At $200+ - I would think this is a cash cow waiting to happen.
The holdup is just too mysterious to me. Plus, the delay is very very long.

I too would have to agree with Brandon C. I think when you talk about recording Triple G, that is more concerned with the new Slingplayer 2.0 (which too has not been release).

The Slingcatcher allows you to cancel out your computer all together. It will also do the same things the XBOX 360, Wii and PS3 can do, in regards to accessing video files and other media via your home network connection.

I would assume that Sling Media is attempting to make sure they aren't releasing a product that would need to be updated in a few months. Everything seemed to be working ok when they showed on their videos on youtube.

I would doubt there are very many legal issues, the way i see it, I bet Sling Media is trying to cover all areas to release a product that people want, no matter when it comes out. I wouldn't be surprised if they have added wireless N to work with it, and are attempting to see what else is hitting the market.

Maybe it's all "connected".

The new Slingbox PRO HD will use a new codec (h.264), so maybe Sling is waiting to make a "big bang" roll out with the release of the Slingbox PRO HD. When it comes out, you will also get the new Slingplayer 2.0 and Slingcatcher, wich are "h.264 enabled"?

best regards

Maybe..
Except they could have released it 6 months ago and release an updated one a year later.
I would have bought the slingcatcher 6 months ago. I will not be buying it now whenever it comes out. To those who will buy it: don't expect any firmware updates for a year or two...

By delaying the slingplayer 2.0 and the slingcatcher many many months with not a word of explanation, slingmedia has shown how little they care about their customers...

It is all connected. There is the big world of Intellectual Property and Copyright to consider. Everyone involved (outside SlingMedia) wants their share of this pie. Clipping live sports events and movies are the real problem. It takes forever to work out these details. I'm sure the hardware and software are all ready to go, but the lawyers need to work out the $$ and who gets what. I think we will be lucky to see any release of updated software or hardware before 2009.
