Well, I have got in contact with Sling Support techand he asked me all the usual questions. In the end he told me to try uploading the firmware again, which I have already done.
Speed still the same, most of the time at 110kbps.
We'll see what the next tech will tell me.
Categories: Connectivity and the Internet
Equipment: Slingbox SOLO
Router: DLINK DIR655
Internet: Yahoo DSL ELITE up to 6Mbps down and 768kbps up.
It just seems that no matter what I do, it just don't get any better when remotly watching it.
Upgraded internet speed to top DSL available. I have changed the configuration for slingbox and router several times, I always get the same: 400kbps for the first 10-15sec (fingers crossed) and then it drops to 110kbps and stays there most of the time which is pretty bad when it comes to video streaming.
For the router I configured : a static IP, port forwarding, DHCP list, DMZ. I still have the same result as when I first tried my sling box with no advance configuration at all.
Any Idea guys?
After talking to the other tech , he finally agreed to replace my box.
Just for the record, they sent me a refurbished/used one scratched, but I was thinking, as long as it works I'll be ok with that.
Testing day, I am watching it as I type.
Not much difference than my original one, its slightly better the stream speed goes up and down all the time, I can not watch at 300/ 400 rate for 5 minutes and it drops again.
I got to the point to think that it might be the solo firmware version or something else. My goal now is battle with Sling support and try to make them to send me An AV box in exchange for my solo.
After talking to another representative she or he told the case was escalated to, what they call, second level uhh.
They got my information again to again replace my box, 7 days later nothing, call them back, of course they didn't know what happened and why they still had not shipped the replacement box. I have been calling them for 3 days now and they just keep saying that I will receive a call, email explaining everything, bla, bla, bla. And I found out that this customer support they have is located in Costa Rica, hows that? Just to make my job easier.
Bottom line - My box still does not work. I'll keep trying, now with the second level support, uhh. It give chills.
Somebody called me at home claiming to be a level 3 tech.
We worked together trying to solve my problem.
After a while he was able to get my unit solo running consistently with speed above 500 kbps which is great.
Next day, I was able to enjoy the same speed at work, unfortunately that was it (one day).
It's been over a week now and I still have a very slow speed, tried to talk to them but it has been a painful process for me.
My firmware has been upgraded with the new Beta player, but as far as video streaming goes, still very disappointing.
We'll see what is coming next, hopefully I will be able to get somebody over Sling Support that has a clue.
Try a different router.,....
The DIR655 doesn't work (at least for me and most other people) with Slingbox SOLO.
I just downloaded the BETA version two days ago and since have been having the same exact problem. After a minute I get 110 at the best. Prior to installing the BETA version I stayed in the 350-450 range for over a year with same box with a 512 DSL upload connection.
Also I noticed that the optimizing feature is not buffering correctly. A while back I went out of town and used a Air Card and at the most could only get 100kpbs, but after 5 minute of buffering time I was able to watch movies with no problem except the video was slightly poorer then normal. Now even at 110kbps it will run constantly choppy.
I would recommend waiting for the BETA testing to finish before buying any new routers or sling boxes. At least that is what I'm going to do.
We are not the only ones having this issue since the BETA install from what I've read on the internet.
I would replace my router, but since I took my solo unit to a friends house and tried it over, I kind of gave up replacing it for the simple reason that it didn't work for him as well and he has a different internet provider and different router too, he has a linksys router
What I think is funny, is the fact that I talked to all kind of technincians over slingmedia support, they haven't fixed or figured out the problem I am having and now, my case was considered as done, fixed and I just was pushed all the way down to the bottom again as if as I have just started reporting these problems.
As of right now I am supposed to be waiting for somebody to call me, hopefully this week 08/18/08, and then see if we get anywhere.
Like I said in one of my postings, slingmedia support is in Costa Rica, I wonder if the headquarter in California is paying attetion to the job that is being provided/performed by Costa Rica's branch. Not a very good one!
Another thing that sucks is that once you have the new firmware you can not downgrade it to the prior one.
Hello, I am the person that swaped slingboxes with rlima69, I also had no problems with my AV until dowloading the new beta player. Now I too have the same problem with speeds dropping to 110kbs. There is no way revert back to the previous firmware either so now I am stuck with a pretty much unusable slingbox. I hope they fix this beta soon.
Hey guys check this thread out, maybe there is a light in the end of tunnel for people who wants to downgrade. - http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/24622/Slingbox-Pro-v1.0.39-non-str...
I am back up and running! I found the same information from Broomstick and trick my unit into reinstating the older firmware. Here are his instructions:
http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/24708/Help-----My-speeds-keep-cras...
This is great - which version of the Solo firmware did you install and where did you get it?
Steve
Remove Slingplayer 2.0 and reinstall 1.5. They still have the link at SlingMedia if needed. Then go to your ProgramFiles\SlingMedia\SlingPlayer folder and copy device version of the .bin file to your desktop. Then follow the other guys instructions on changing the code. Put the file back into your SlingMedia folder and run the player. Right at the end of its connection process it will tell you there is new firmware and ask if you want it. It was very easy and only took about 10 minutes.
Old version was 1.0.9 for A/V and new version is 1.2.8. I made my new-new one and called it 1.2.9 and changed the date from 07/28/2008 to 07/29/2008. If you don't have a A/V box then you need to go to your sling directory and click on edit and then the information tab and write down your version and date.
Also I opened both .bin files, old and new, for side by side comparsion to make it very easy to see what characters needed to be changed. To do this remember to grab the .bin file from the current Slingplayer 2.0 folder before you delete it.
Hope this helps!
I am searching for an older firmware version for the Solo as I had similar issues with the firmware in the 1.5 release. I have managed to find a Slingplayer 1.4 version, but there is no specific Solo firmware in that software package. Does anyone know what the most solid Solo Firmware is, and where to get it?
Steve
I have downgraded the firmware for my solo with a Hex editor like I saw in that thread, it does work.
I have it running the 1_0_13 with different number now but still, its not working for me, I am still getting that 110kbps.
Does anybody know if there is a firmware in between 1_0_13 and the Beta version?
Yes, I tried exactly the same thing last night and got the same results - maybe it worked a little longer before dropping to 110 kbps.
So it looks as though the Solo owners still have an issue!
Steve
I have had the same problems. None before the update.
Can not believe there is not a standard reset for the firmware, since it "makes" you install the firmware if you use the Beta software public release.
There is a big difference in beta software and beta firmware when there is no reset. Have not found a cure yet. Support seems to be lacking and it seems more common now.
Slingmedia better step up, Its football season.
I have downgraded my firmware back to 1_0_17 with Hex editor for my AV and I am back up and running here at work for 45min with no drop to 110kbps so far although I am not getting the speed I used to, but at least it works.
Strange thing is I logged on to rlima's solo last night from home and had no dropouts for over 1 hour with a constant 500-700kbps but at work today his dropped down to 110kbps within seconds....????
I am just as bemused by this. I can connect over a WAN to my slingbox solo and get consistent 800K performance, but as soon as I introduce an internet leg into it, I drop to 110K within 15 seconds or so. Just as strangely, I tried downloading a 95M document at the same time - I calculated that it was downloading at around 2Mbit/s at the same time as my solo was going up to 400K then down to 110, then back to 400 etc. I think there may be something in the algorithm that the box uses to work out the available bandwidth, and forcing that to fixed speeds in the manual setting doesnt seem to do much either - it still goes down to 110K
Anyone tried Support on this?

Ok, I guess I was able to figure it out.
A friend of mine recently got an AV Slingbox, and he accepted swapping units with me for one day to help me troubleshoot this problem. It happens that we work for the same company, therefore we use the same network. I saw the signal he had on his computer when watching through his AV Slingbox, 1400kbps, I was amazed, well I understand he has better internet, cable, but still. After seeing that I figured, it's either my router, my DSL internet or my slingbox unit.
Test day: My signal at work is at 500kbps average, the lowest it dropped after hours was 300kbps.
His computer testing my box: Goes up to 1200kbps and after a little while it drops to, guees waht, 110kbps.
Whith that being said, I guess it's time to contact SlingBox and see what they can do about it.
I'll let you guys know how it went.
