Hello guys...new member here,

I have a Slingbox AV and I have two questions regarding the setup.  Actually I have it configured and working already, but I have two issues.

(A)  Is it possible (with the AV) to watch something independent of the TV, for example, my kids are watching SpongeBob at home and I obviously don't want to.  Would that require a splitter taking the feed from the Motorola Cable box and sending one end to the TV and the other to the SB?  How would I change channels at that point?

(B)  The other is involving the sound.  I think there is only one "OUT" port (red and white) from the cable box, which goes directly to the TV.  I of course must have the TV on to hear audio when I am connected to the SB.  Is there an equivalent splitter for the audio as well, so I could get audio when the TV is not on?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.  I am hoping this can be acomplished with my current setup, instead of purchasing a SB - Pro.

p.s. - I have a Blackberry and look forward to the day I can watch with it...if that day ever actually arrives :)

I don't think the AV has it's own tuner. You would need a separate receiver to watch something else.

Try splitting it then hooking it into an old VCR then into the AV. Youy can use the old VCR as a tuner.

Yeah, I forgot there would need to be a tuner of some sort.  I have a recordable DVD player I could use.  I would imagine it would need to be on at all times?

Just to clarify... you'll have to split the cable feed between the wall and the Motorola box. The device fed with only the cable will not be able to tune the higher cable channels (digital channels usually) unless that device has a QAM tuner and/or using a CableCard.

Thanks Les.

I guess I am trying to picture the setup in my mind here.  On the recordable DVD player, (which can view the stations), I am hoping there are two 'OUT' ports as one is used to go to the TV, and one could go to the SB.  If not, hopefully there are some RCA cables that split one feed into two and I could route it up to the SB that way.

If this scenario is possible, would it be logical to think that the DVD player would need to be on at all times, or could the SB get the feed via the cables only?

The slingbox should be able to turn the DVD recorder off and on if has the remote codes for it. Also the slingbox should have a pass through so you won't need a splitter.

Unfortunately, the SlingBox AV does not have any type of pass through.

G4SB, There is no way to allow independent channel changes if the same cable box feeds two devices (TV and SlingBox). And, I've never seen Y-ed composite cables anyway.

With one cable box, your only option is to use another tuner (in the TV, DVD recorder, VCR, etc.) which limits that second device to the analog channels unless that second device has a CableCard.

If your cable box has an RF Out, you can use that for the second device while using the composite output for the SlingBox. Although that limits the channels available to the second device, that's about the best you can do if you want independent channel control.
