I was going to get Pay as You Go Mobile Broadband so I could hook up to my Slingbox anywhere there was mobile coverage. There are various download amounts per month i.e. 1GB through to 10GB, after that you start paying through the nose per MB.

I'm assuming that by using my slingbox, the streaming of the video would eat up these GB fairly rapidly and watching say a football game lasting 2 hours (with half time included) would be send my bill into the stratosphere.

 Is this correct?

 Regards

 John

That is correct. What is the upload/download rate on that plan? On my connection, I get 768kbps Which equates to about 250-300MB per hour of bandwidth.

Phil thanks for that.

Vodafone in the UK is saying Download up to 7.2 Mpbs and upload speed up to 2.1 Mpbs. The key here is 'up to'. So far these topend figures have fallen well short especially at peak times.

Excuse my ignorance but if I were to watch my sling box for two hours what approximately would the GB usage be and how are you calculating it?

Thanks again

I'm assuming that the pay as you go broadband is just for viewing the slingbox. I'm going to also assume that your upload speed at the location of your slingbox matches the download of your pay as you go internet. So, here's the math:

Download 7.2Mbps = 7,200 Kilobits per second
7,200 kilobits per second = 7200/8 = 900 KiloBytes per second.
900 KiloBytes per second * 60 seconds in 1 min = 54,000 KB per min.
54,000 KB per min * 60 Min in 1 Hour = 3,240,000 KB per hour
3,240,000 KB per hour = 3.2 GB per hour.
3.2GB per hour * 2.5 hours = 8 GB per football program at peak speeds.

Now, you'll probably never get peak speeds. But I would say about 75% of it is a reasonable assumption. So 6GB per show is about what I suspect it will be if you have matching speeds.

Brilliant.
