As far as I know there shouldn't be any difference - from what I understand the UPNP fuctionality just makes the router config updates required automatically and thats it.

I do believe on some devices UPNP can be used on an as you go basis eg. the program that needs extended Port access opens up the router temporarily then locks down again - but I don't think this is the case with Slingplayer..
