I have a machine in my basement (an HP m9100t if anyone cares) that is/was my primary computer to watch my slingbox.  It has Vista Home Premium x64 on it for the OS.  I have a slingbox pro that I have installed at a friend's house so that I can pick up one of the channels that he has that I can not get.  I installed everything and had it working fine for a few months.  All of a sudden one day when I try to watch the slingplayer it connects just fine but it says that it is only streaming at 4 Kbps and there is no picture or audio.  I can watch the slingplayer on any of the other computers on my network so I know that the slingbox is working fine and my router is not blocking the traffic.  I assumed that Windows update or my firewall/AV program (Norton at the time/Windows Live One Care now) had pulled down an update that caused a conflict.  After lots of troubleshooting I ended up removing Norton entirely and rolling the computer back to factory settings.  When I reinstall the Slingplayer it still has the same issue.  Slingmedia technical support doesn't seem to know what the issue could be.  Does anybody know of a similar issue with Vista x64 and know what I can do to fix the situation?  Thanks in advance.

It has to be a conflict in a firewall or router setting, because it's working just fine here using the following senario:

Slingbox Pro
HP m9430F with windows vista home premium 64 bit OS
4 additional computers within my own network runing windows vista 32 bit OS
3 additional computers within my own network runing windows xp pro sp3

All work fine.

Still not sure exactly what your issue may be caused by, but since it runs finwe on all other computers within your network; it has to be a problem that resides on the symptomatic PC in question or a routing table issue from it to your router. If your router comtains POS services, try giving the internal address assigned to this specific PC priority. You may also wish to try adding this computer into the routers DMZ zone or bypass the router altogeather just to determine if it's the router or the PC as the underlying cause.

Since I have tried both turning off the firewall and AV as well as removing them entirely would you focus on the router as the source of the problem? The really confusing piece is that it worked fine for a couple of months and without any changes to the computer or network it just started having this issue. I will take the feed from the cable modem and connect it directly to the computer and see what happens. Thanks-

Vista in either 32 or 64 bit, has issues with ownership concerning configuration files i.e.; .ini or .cfg. and the Vista registry. Without having to be a Vista 'guru', you can fix this a few ways.

Either don't install programs in the 'Program Files' folder or install this little program.

Download these .reg files and run them. They will add a "Take Ownership" option to your right click menu . One does it and the other un-does it. Problem solved.

I appreciate the info. but I don't understand where the issue of ownership is causing the streaming issue. I am not a Vista or Slingbox guru so any help is appreciated. Can you explain your thoughts on this? I am willing to try anything at this point. Thanks-

I gave you the solution.

Your Sling player configuration is not saving your setup info because Vista requires that the Admin sets up all file sharing permissions which includes what is refered to as 'ownership'.  This happens on many programs written originally for MS XP or trys to accomodate XP & Vista i.e.; Sling Player 1.5.x. For futher info, you can contact Sling Customer Support or support at microsoft.com.

Thanks for the replay. Just for clarification I am able to launch the Slingplayer and connect (I think) to the Slingbox. It just says the bitrate of the stream is 4Kbps. Do you think that the ownership (or missing piece of) is causing the streaming issue?

I am also having problems with Vista. Used to work now will not connect. My mac's still work fine.

Any ideas???

Mine connects (or seems to) but it doesn't stream a picture or audio. It just says that it is streaming at 4 Kbps. Nothing has worked so far. I have made changes to my router and have removed/turned off my firewall and AV programs. There is something with the SlingPlayer application and Vista that are in conflict. Are you running Vista x64 bit?
