About a month ago while remote viewing my slingbox, the remote control was suddenly disabled.  I tried reseting, rebooting and upgrading the firmware on my SlingBox AV, but nothing fixed the issue.

Then I upgraded to the new SlingPlayer Beta and my problem was solved...for about a week.  Now whenever I reset my SlingBox and re-run the setup wizard I get the following error message when I set my Country as USA:

"This SlingBox was not originally designed to to be used in USA.  Click fix to changed the location or Contrinue to proceed anyway"

If I click fix and try another country, I get the same message for all available countries.  If I continue, the setup succeeds, by my original problem (disabled remote in the SlingPlayer) persists.

Please help!  College football season is in full swing and I'm dying with no SB at my tailgates!

I'm just seeing this now - but hopefully you've long since contacted support. The only fix I know of for this is an RMA.

Yes, I have contacted support and they have indicated it's likely a defunct box. I need to call them back while at home (on my LAN) so we can confirm this and hopefully go through the RMA process.

On a related note, the technical support was actually very knowledgeable and helpful. It may have helped that I already had posted my issue to the community.

Thanks for the reply. I'll add to this thread when I get to some sort of resolution.

I'm not sure if anyone is checking this thread, but I'll follow up just in case.

I just got off the phone with SlingBox support and they are processing an RMA for me. This will likely get me back and running.

On a related note, I am fairly certain that my Slinbox is out of warranty (by a couple of months), so don't let this deter you from seeking support if you are experiencing a similar issue.

Glad they're taking care of you.

I'm having the same problem, and Slingbox wants to charge me $29.99 to even discuss the problem. I used to be a big advocate of the Slingbox, but if a software update is going to kill the box 2 months after the warranty expires, I can't recommend the product anymore.

Frustrating - I'm about to go on a two week business trip and the slingbox would have been handy.

Any ideas besides replacing the box? Since I'm out of warranty, I think for me that would require buying another box.

I had no problems getting (free) support and having the my Slingbox swapped out for one that actually works at no charge. The RMA process was quick and painless.

Other than getting an newer Slingbox I have not heard of any fix for this issue.

A couple of questions:
When did you do your RMA?
Was your unit still under warranty?
Did they make you pay the $29 fee before they would discuss it with you?

I'm hoping this is a temporary glitch in their tech support procedures - it's worth a few more calls, I suppose.

I began the RMA process on 10/10/2008 and it was processed (i.e. I had my new SlingBox) around 10/20.

My SlingBox was out of warranty by a few months, but this was never brought up as an issue by the Sling Media support.

I did NOT pay any fees.

Hopefully your persistence will pay off. Also, you may want to reference this forum thread when you call.

I am now having the same problem - remote control is grayed out

If I run the set up assistant to configure the "video source" - it seems that the software cannot recognize the receiver - i.e. it doesn't give me any choices for receiver manufacturer or model. I can't help but wonder if i didn't recently stretch the thin wire connected to the things that try to control the satellite receiver - I just noticed how stretched the wire was and I recently moved my furniture etc... I had also momentarily unplugged that same cable by accident - so not sure if I caused the problem?? Not sure what else to try :(

"show remote control" is grayed out from any computer I connect from. I also recently had reset my Dish Network satellite receiver to it's default settings so I am trying to figure out if I screwed something up.

I'm having the same problem as well. Remote disappeared. Resetting to factory defaults and running the setup assistant gives me the message 'This Slingbox was not originally designed to be used in USA', and it's all downhill from there. I RMA'd this unit once before (different problem). Looks like I need to do it again.

I just ran into this problem this morning, worked fine last Thursday when I was in Wisconsin working, I'm in Oklahoma this week and am now getting the grayed out remote button and the message "This Slingbox was not originally designed to be used in the USA". I called support and they wanted 29+ bucks to diagnose the problem, I don't think so, the box is only 5 months old. Has anyone actually found a fix for this or are they just plucking and chucking the hardware? I'm ready to take a 5lb sledge to it and ship the little pieces back to them.

I am having the same problem. I did a search on the net and this is thread is what I have found so far. Slingplayer did an upgrade right after I installed it now I cant do a thing with my box

March 11, 2009 6:51 AM updated: March 11, 2009 6:51 AM

I just went through the entire country list. And according to the setup, "This Slingbox was not originally designed to be used in" any country.

Help?
Please...
Thanks

RMA was the only fix for mine. After about an hour of unplugging/replugging/powering down/powering up/resetting/reconfiguring/etc./etc. over the phone. I had to buy the extended warranty to get SlingMedia to talk to me because it was more than 90 days since I had RMA'd the last one. New unit (#3 for me so far) is working fine -- for now.

Count me as another person getting this error. And right at the start of March Madness.

This is a sham if Sling is getting $30 for everyone's lemon slingplayer unit. I have loved this product but my opinion could quickly change if they want to charge me an arm and a leg to fix a problem that is in no way my fault.

Dang, I had to contact SB too. I finally got my HD Pro up and running after the previous "upgrade" hurt it and now I can't use the remote controls. Dang.

Oh well, hopefully this fixes it.

How did they get it running?

March 25, 2009 12:37 PM

Sorry, no, they didn't get this one fixed. I'm doing the RMA.

What I meant was that I hope that this ends all the issues.
