About a month ago while remote viewing my slingbox, the remote control was suddenly disabled.  I tried reseting, rebooting and upgrading the firmware on my SlingBox AV, but nothing fixed the issue.

Then I upgraded to the new SlingPlayer Beta and my problem was solved...for about a week.  Now whenever I reset my SlingBox and re-run the setup wizard I get the following error message when I set my Country as USA:

"This SlingBox was not originally designed to to be used in USA.  Click fix to changed the location or Contrinue to proceed anyway"

If I click fix and try another country, I get the same message for all available countries.  If I continue, the setup succeeds, by my original problem (disabled remote in the SlingPlayer) persists.

Please help!  College football season is in full swing and I'm dying with no SB at my tailgates!

whats the name of your setup file?

July 20, 2009 12:49 AM

SlingPlayer-2.0.3508-Setup-US

It's saved in my Windows vista download folders.

I have 2 PCs and a Mac, it's not the wrong country files I've downloaded.

July 20, 2009 12:51 AM

I am installing the UK version to see If i can recreate your issue

July 20, 2009 12:57 AM updated: July 20, 2009 12:59 AM

It's not the software dude, it's the hardware/firmware. It says the BOX is not made to be used in the USA. It doesn't say "You've downloaded the wrong country's software, or the software is incompatible"

Unless you brick your box the way some of ours have, you can't really recreate this as far as I know.

The "This box not made for the USA error"

This is what you end up with even after putting in your zip code and selecting your cable provider. It SHOULD say something like Tivo or Comcast next to the highlighted box, not "unconfigured." However you can't select any specific boxes because of the USA error.

You have a pro correct not a pro hd.

I have the same hardware version 1.34.1 ran the setup as uk player and no isuues I will try resetting it

can you post screens of the properties

July 20, 2009 1:21 AM

I have the old red pro which is HD ready, I just don't have the HD adapter.

This is basically the older equivalent of the new Pro-HD. They had a lower level slingbox back then that didn't have the HD option (like the new solo)

and this shot too

July 20, 2009 1:38 AM

Not much to seek, like I said, because of the error I can't select any box makes, not cable, not DVR. all I can select it "other", but then it won't let me even complete setup that way. It asks me to put in codes for my box, and I don't have the codes. I have to go back and select the option "uncontrollable box" because of these errors.

When I first upgraded it still had me set up as a tivo series 2, but again the remote was grayed out then too. That's when I reset and tried to start over.

There are tons of logs here

C:\ProgramData\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0

The IR blaster version of 10 seems odd to me but maybe someone can figure this out.

BTW how do you like your hava?

July 20, 2009 7:31 AM

I tried your steps Bryan, thanks for the help, but the remote is still grayed out.  I'm not getting any USA errors and I have the program guide, but the remote is still grayed.

I'm on a mac, so this procedure doesn't work. I did try rolling back my firmware, though. I got a hold of an older firmware version and tried to upload via the "update Slingbox Firmware" in the Configuration menu. Unfortunately, even thought the software was labeled the same thing as the newer software, the 'updater' knew that the Slingbox already has a newer version and wouldn't let me install. :(

you have to install the OLD firmware. But before you do you need to make it look like its the newer firmware, but changing its version using the hex editor.
the instruction are in the post above.

a) I didn't keep any earlier versions of the slingbox software.
b) Screw slingbox. It's time to start dissing this piece of crap. Any company that would screw their customers deserves to be screwed too.
c) I don't have the time or patience to bother with this. My Slingbox used to work, since they published a firmware upgrade it works no more. Screw them.
d) Long live HAVA. As soon as I get one I'll throw my slingbox in the garbage and forget Slingbox ever existed. Until then I'll live with one channel.
e) To the poster: Thanks for trying to solve the problem - I for one have no interest in HEX and computing for that matter - too bad the Sling team didn't work as hard as you did to find the solution. To all you SLingbox buyers out there... buy something else.

Seconded. I've already spent way too many hours trying to get this to work. It shouldn't be this hard.

Third, My HAVA should be here tomorrow. I'm not about to sit around doing Sling's job editing files lol. With my luck I'd screw something up worse than Sling did ;)

I'm not throwing mine away, I am hoping one day they'll fix this and soon. But I will not recommend sling to anyone else again, unless they fix this and fast.

I just wanted to post an update.

When I initially installed the new software/firmware I was greeted with the "wrong country" error. I then uninstalled the software the delete all settings option checked and created a new sling account. This time when I installed the software I was able to select my DVR/Service but the remote tests failed and the remote was grayed out when I completed setup.

So today I tried again and got it to work. I'm not sure if I needed to reposition the IR sensors or reseat the IR cable on the slingbox, but once I got the remote tests in setup working the remote appeared when I completed the setup.

Is it standard for the remote to be grayed out if the Ir transmitters aren't plugged in? Thanks to everyone who tried to help, maybe this was operator error and not a conspiracy by Sling?

Chris_M,
Hey that's really great and thanks for posting your results.
Dustin and marcee. Did you try what Chris_M did yet?

July 20, 2009 9:51 PM updated: July 20, 2009 10:44 PM

I have deleted my accounts, created new ones (I now have a sling account for 3 different emails lol) and put it on PCs where there was no sling before. Nothing is working, I am always told wrong country . . .

I will try and fiddle with the IR sensors, but so far I always get the country error. As my sling worked perfectly right before the firmware update, I don't see how it could have much to to with the IR sensors though.

Post Note: I unplugged the IR and every other thing from the slingbox and plugged it back in, still a no go, thinks my Sling is made for some country not found on earth lol
