Since updating my SlingPlayer to version 1.0.6, my aspect ratios are never right in any of the options available.

I've got my Slingbox "Classic" hooked up to my TiVo Series 3 with an S-Video cable. I'm certain the aspect ration was displaying correctly before this player installation which also updated the firmware in my Slingbox.

Here's what's happening when I cycle between the Aspect Ration options:

1. None - I see a 4:3 window with all the video (16:9 worth) squeezed into the frame, leaving people looking "taller" than they would be. (It looks like a DVD player with the aspect ratio set incorrectly playing an 16:9 picture on squashed on a 4:3 screen.)

2. Letterbox - This option still displays the squashed image, but it clips off the top and bottom of the image for a window that is 16:9.

3. Pillarbox - In this view option, the video is NOT squashed anymore but the viewer size is 4:3. People are no longer taller than they are supposed to be, but now the left and right sides of the image are cut off although there really is image information on the screen to display.

4. Windowbox - This shows a 4:3 viewer size but clips off picture information on all 4 sides and displays squashed images just like in the "None" and "Letterbox" option.

What I want is the correct picture, not squeezed, with the Letterbox option. I'm sure it worked that way before the software update.

Can anyone help out?

Ditto - Macbook w/Slingplayer 10.0.6.244, exact same setup as OP, exact same symptoms. Have only tested 16x9 HD recordings.

If I open up the SlingPlayer preference file in Property List Editor (part of the Mac developer tools, I believe), there is a preference for "Fit TV to Player". Even if I manually change that between Yes and No, there doesn't seem to be a change in the what the SlingPlayer displays. It looks like that preference should have some change on the video, but maybe it was overlooked in the most recent build of the player. I hope the Sling Media folks are looking into this.

Me also - in the previous version 10.4 it had a 16:9 ratio and now in 10.6 is doesn't.

The other ratios don't seem to fit very well.

add me to the list of unlucky updaters...

I really don't like when an upgrade actually looks more like a downgrade. Up to now, I havn't found any plus to this upgrade !

I have just reverted back to 1.04 and all is good. The firmware upgrade was done on the Solo when I upgraded to 1.06 but reverting back to Slingplayer 1.04 had got the ratio options back.
Will stick to this situation while they try and sort out the bugs.

Tripyrenees,

Did you find the 1.04 Sling Player software on slingmedia.com somewhere? I haven't found it there.

October 17, 2008 8:39 AM

I had a copy on my Macbook so I just re-installed this onto the Imac. It also kept all my settings which was handy.

If you have somewhere I can upload it to then let me know. - it is 66 megs

Just had an email from Sling people - the aspect ratio 16:9 has been deleted on purpose so reverting back to the 1.04 will suffice for the time being.

October 17, 2008 10:05 AM

Why would they do that on purpose????

October 17, 2008 10:15 AM

I don't know - they said they couldn't comment on it.

Maybe they forgot??

Anyway 1.04 is goode enough for me as I don't use the HD option anyway.

Would love to find a download link. If someone can get me the previous version, I'll stick it up on MobileMe or DropBox.

I just got off the phone with Sling Box support. After having me reboot, reconfigure my Slingbox, I got some possible answers. (I did whole reset/reconfiguring although I kept telling them that was not the problem, but I digress.)

The man who answered the phone got off several times to talk to someone. He reported that many people have complained about the removal of the 16:9 feature and that it will be addressed in the update to the software, 1.07. He didn't say when this might be coming out though.

I talked to a Slingbox support rep via their chat applet, he said something to the effect that there was a patch released yesterday that might fix the issue.

I am having other issues with 1.0.6 - completely crashing and shutting down. Would be great to get the 1.04 version back...

Funny, in the Release Highlights for 1.0.6 on the download page it says "Users can rapidly cycle between Fullscreen (4:3), Widescreen (16:9), Letterbox, Windowbox, Pillarbox modes". Guess they forgot they deleted the Widescreen option. Glad I checked this forum before updating my software.

Yes 1.04 doesn't have the aspect ratio problem, but it's now a popup telling the using to update the player continually appears and I can't seem to find away to turn it off.
