In addition to working on the BlackBerry and iPhone clients, our SlingPlayer Mobile team is planning the next generation of SPM.  And they want to hear from you, the users, what you want to see.  So here's your chance, respond with comments to this thread.

---

Sling Community,

At Sling we’re hard at work on the next generation of SlingPlayer Mobile, and we want your ideas on how to make it better!

We would love to hear your thoughts on:

- What you like about SPM now

- What you don’t like about SPM now

- What features you would like to see added.  The sky is the limit!  (BlackBerry and iPhone players are in the works – so we don’t need any encouragement there!)

- How you use SPM now.  Not using it?  Tell us why.

There has never been a better time to make your mark on SPM than now.

Happy Slinging,

-The SlingPlayer Mobile Team

EDIT - October 16, 2008:

This feedback is great everyone, and the product team has been reading it all.  But I was discussing it with them yesterday and they had one main bit of feedback - you're thinking too small!  THINK BIG!  Incremental improvements to what we do today are great, and that's valuable feedback, but we also want to hear your wild ideas.  If you had a clean sheet of paper, what would you want to see from SlingPlayer Mobile?

If you could change anything about it - the UI, the features - anything, what would you do?  You can imagine a new UI completely, new features and functionality, etc.  If there are things about other media players you wish you had in SPM, go ahead and suggest it.  You don't have to limit yourself to evolutionary changes to the current SPM - be as revolutionary as you want.

This is all about concepts for the next generation of SPM - SlingPlayer Mobile 2.0 if you will.  Nothing is of the table - well, nothing within reason or reality. ;-)  We can't do anything about the devices, so we still have to operate within the constraints of the hardware and operating systems, but that still leaves a lot of room.

We're also offering a little added incentive for your feedback.  Everyone who submits a suggestion for SlingPlayer Mobile by the end of October will be entered into a random drawing.  The Grand Prize is a free SlingPlayer Mobile license, good on any of our supported platforms.  Five additional winners will receive Sling Media T-shirts, and just maybe some additional Halloween treats.

The rules, simple as they are:
1. Post your SlingPlayer Mobile suggestions in this thread.
2. Posts made before midnight PDT October 31st qualify for the drawing.
3. One entry per poster, multiple posts won't mean multiple entries in the drawing.
4. The suggestions need to be reasonable to qualify.  "It should make waffles!" isn't reasonable.  No, biscuits aren't reasonable either.  ;-)

We'll contact the winners via the PM (private message) feature of these forums, so make sure you read your PMs.

And thanks again for the great feedback so far!  (And yes, if you've already posted you qualify for the drawing.)

I'm sure this is already in the works, but I'll toss up a vote for the ability to enter my login/password and have the mobile client find my slingbox(es) the way the new desktop client (2.0) does now. IMO that falls into the "must have" category

A feature to automatically check for updates would be nice too, instead of having to do a manual check.. that would a a great one for the "nice to have" category.

Landscape mode for SPM for Palm OS running on a Palm TX utilizing the full screen. I know the TX is not supported, but it works, so please support it.

One thing that would be nice is the ability to back up the settings and favorite channels and restore them after an upgrade or hard reset.

i will be getting the new G1 with Android and would love to watch my sling on it and have shortcut bookmarks to my channels.

Utilization of other buttons as shortcuts, i.e. multimedia buttons on N95.

Another shout for backup of settings, favorites and slingbox details

Along those lines, how about the ability for users to map keys to whatever function they want?

October 10, 2008 3:52 PM

For SlingPlayer Palm OS:

Full Screen Mode

The ability to "knock off" someone else using Slingbox..."My Kids"

Ability to save SPM settings and Channel Favorites in Sling Accounts

Add date and Time ...maybe toggle between "Statistics"

...ask the webmaster to put the correct SPM Palm "Version" on slingmedia.com...still says 1.0.0.17 in one palce and 1.00.19 in another. Correct version should be 1.0.0.19.

Here is a SPM request that I posted a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if it's possible but here it is:

Include an advanced option to give the user the ability to have Slingplayer Mobile send the PAUSE command to the source (when slinging a DVR/DVD/VCR output) whenever an incoming call to the phone is taken. This way, when the call ends, the user can resume watching the movie/TV show/sporting event where he/she left off before the incoming call was answered.

Here's the issue and maybe you can solve the problem. Now that Sling and Dish are one. I have a Dish DVR and a SlingBox. I also have a few places I go on the weekends and I would love to be able to take this content with me to be played on TVs at the alternate locations. (I'm too cheap to pay for a second Dish or Internet access since I don't spend enough time at the other locations.)

How about some device that allows me to "sling" this DVR content that can be mobile. (I can hook it up in my car, a mobile player or an alternate TV.)

Dish has a product, the "PocketDish" that is probably the answer. But, what about a device that has only two functions, 1) Actually acts as the computer to sling content to a tv/monitor. (In other words, picks up a WiFi connection and "plug & plays". 2) Memory that will hold content from the DVR to be played.

You do realize the Treo screens are square whereas television content is rectangular...?

As far as my suggestions, it's time to allow resolutions higher than 320x240. With WiFi and 3G, we can fill some of these new devices with good stuff. I also assume Sling Account integration is on the way. Also let me rotate the screen in either direction, don't assume how I lay my handset on the treadmill. ;) But more than new features, it's most important to keep up with new models.

Dave, you do realize that there are several models of non-Treo Palms that have 320x480 screens which can be connected to a phone via Bluetooth?  (I connect my Palm to my Blackberry to run SPM; works nicely.)

My request, though, would be to allow *both* the battery monitor AND the bitrate to be seen at the same time in the title bar.  It's trivial compared to some of the other stuff people are asking for, I realize, but it would make life easier for me.

I'm aware of those models and also aware that they are not officially supported by Sling. Treos and Centros (with their square screens) are it. If I were Sling, I wouldn't waste any more time on the current Palm OS anyway - it's a dying platform. Even if Palm goes with the next generation software (as opposed to Android or their existing Windows Mobile initiatives), it'll be quite different I'm sure.

I have enjoyed both the Palm and WinMo clients. Here are a few of my suggestions:

-Integrated program guide like Desktop 2.0 (perhaps even an interface to program your DVR?)
-Support for 320x320 in WinMo for new devices like the Treo 800w
-With an SD card, perhaps you can support a buffer on the SPM?
-I agree with the person who talked about saving out configurations...but this should be as easy as integrating the player with your Sling account, right?
-Fullscreen mode

October 11, 2008 9:01 AM

1 - Higher resolutions
2 - The ability to connect through a proxy
3 - Agreed with the buffer on SD card
4 - Ability to lock the player in full screen (pain in the arse at the moment when you acidentially tap a touch screen)

October 11, 2008 1:29 PM

1 - Send audio to a Bluetooth ear piece (headset profile, not A2DP)
2 - Program guide
3 - Data transfer log

Personally I'd say open source the client API. I'd imagine it's hard enough to maintain the desktop clients -- adding multiple device specific clients must add on a significant level of complexity.

Although the first Blackberry implementation of SPM is on the way, the new Blackberry Storm promises to be a killer device for SPM, with EVDO Rev A, and a large screen with landscape mode. It would be great to have SPM support the device and some touch-screen features. I know, I'm looking for enhancements to a product that's not even in beta, but there you go!

Okay, I understand Sling is working on a player for iPhone but I'd like to make
sure that the player supports H.264. It is VERY important and I'm sure you
understand. BTW, I went out and bought a PRO-HD with the promise that Sling will deliver a player for iPhone in the near future. Please keep that in mind.

Actually I don't understand why it is important to support H.264.  It isn't necessarily to support H.264 to support the PRO-HD.  In fact, the PRO-HD does not stream H.264 to mobile clients today at all.  It only uses H.264 when streaming to SlingPlayer 2.0.  The codec used shouldn't matter.

I understand the PRO-HD doesn't stream H.264 to existing mobile clients
today because none of them (the ones on the market) can do H.264 today.
But iPhone is a new platform and Sling ought to make iPhone the first client
to support H.264. As you know, H.264 is the direction the industry is
moving so no reason for Sling to use the legacy codec for the new platform.
H.264 is important because it can reduce bandwidth as much as 50 percent
without compromising the picture quality compared with wmv. Another
word, you get twice the resolution for the same bandwidth. So why wouldn't
Sling do H.264 for iPhone? I'm sure Apple and AT&T will be glad to see a
H.264 Sling player for iPhone.

We are taking about what is next on SBM, yet we have been waiting on SBM for Blackberry since it was anounce on CES 2008. CES 2009 is around the corner and nothing yet.
Maybe the anouncement was too anticipated or some technical problems came, but, and this is my request,... a little more information of what is happening would be great...
I hope for minor and medium efficiency upgrades, a little more often, and please, don't announce something that you cannot deliver in, let say 2 months????
