You are very mixed up good sir.
When a Slingbox is new (or reset) it uses DHCP to get it's IP address. When you want internet access to the box it gets a static IP and uses UPnP to do portforwarding on the router.
UPnP is a method used to configure other network devices. IMHO it is very unsafe on routers because viruses/spyware can use the same method to open ports on the same router. It works very well with printers and other internal network devices.
I've always used a manual IP in my Slingbox Solo with a fixed static IP address configured directly on the Slingbox. I know originally when I got my Slingbox Classic a number of years ago, I could have used DHCP and UPNP instead of port forwarding.
I decided to try and play around with it, to see if I can get it working with my new router. I wanted to configured the Slingbox for DHCP and setup a static IP based on it's MAC address in my router. I also wanted to set up UPNP rather than port forwarding.
So I tried to do this with 2.0, but I don't see any way to do it. The setup assistant keeps trying to tell me how to set up port forwarding in my router. It also just shows me my IP address/gateway and lets me change it, but not to DHCP.
Are these features taken away with 2.0, or is there some other way to configure this?
Ok.. so you have to use Static IP for internet access. DHCP doesn't work for WAN access of a Slingbox. Is that true?
I know what UPNP is, which is why I was trying to use it instead of manually setting up port forwarding. I realize the potential issues with it. I can set up port forwarding on my router, no problem. I was just wondering if I don't set up port forwarding, is there some setting in the slingbox that I can use to enable UPNP rather than port forwarding, or is it automatic?
When you use the "internet setup" wizard, it by default uses UPnP to try and configure the router. However in that same wizard, you can by-pass using UPnP (it assumes you are going to do the port forwarding) and manually set the Slingbox IP, netmask & gateway.
I really don't like that wizard. It must be completed in auto mode or manually for internet viewing to work.

hmm...I cancelled out of the internet configuration and now when I look at settings, it shows the slingbox as being setup with DHCP.. weird.
