Sounds confusing... I ordered a SlingBox the other day and is due tomorrow and have a V+ Box, I'm going to get very confused I can tell. This is going to turn out quite expensive! oh well, hope its worth it! Can I just ask, once I have the box and everything, don't I need another ethernet cable if my V+ Box isn't in the same room as my Router? Please let me know.
Worth reading if your thinking about getting a SlingBox Solo for your Virgin Media V+ box at home!
Hey guys
Just want to share my recent experience with the V+ box from Virgin and setting up the Slingbox Solo. I initially tried to hook up the box with the enclosed Composite cable kit but could only achieve audio throughput but no video. I made sure all the correct forwarding details were setup in the router and software was configured correctly to the correct STB.
Initially the box was connected through a Zyxel homeplug kit (PLA401) as the box is in a different room from the router, thinking the issue was homeplug (as the bitrate was as low as 300Kbps with no video), i moved the V+ and slingbox beside the router and direct connected (Dlink 655 router), only to have the same problem again.
After much humming and hawing, I spoke with tech support at sling media, nice chap talked me through the basic setup and reccomended that the issue would be with the V+ outputting a video signal, seing how strict the box is with HDCP content. Yes the box was correctly set to composite output and would happily display the image on the TV screen, just not over my network connection.
I changed over the video output to Component after picking up 2 cable kits from Currys (£13 per 1.5m cable) and setup the V+ to Y-Pb-Pr outputwith Component passthrough on the slingbox.... and bingo, sound and picture!
After setting up the Slingplayer software and slingplayer mobile, all is working very well with full control over the V+ service including recorded content and on demand services both with slingplayer and the mobile software. V+ remote is fully functional in Sling Player v2.0, one reccomendation I have is if you are a cable broadband customer as well then get yourself 20Mb, the increased upload speed will make a huge difference to your mobile access viewing! Or get 50Mb if your lucky enough to be in a new launch franchise area!
Highly reccomended for Virgin Media customers, just make sure you pick up some Component audio and video cables!

The picture above shows the V+ main menu running in Sling Player 2.0, notice the horizontal breaks in picture, this only appears when menu's are up on screen.
Above is the on screen programming guide, ironically the one time I take a screen shot there is no picture problems! Even the weather man is shocked...
I hadnt used the slingbox for around 8 weeks due to house renovations, when I reconnected again I was delighted to finally see a v2 software update for UK sling player. After installation and reconnecting to my slingbox again, heres a quick breakdown of performance since then...

If you move the slingplayer window to the edge of your viewable screen in Vista, the player will adjust the position of the remote control automatically, nice touch!
The picture problems are still there, lines through the picture in all modes (even basic) gives a poor quality picture. Recently I have changed to the 50Mb cable broadband service from Virgin Media and still get the same issues (1.5Mb upload) so it canno tbe the internet connection thats at fault.
The software will still often lose sync to the box, sound is perfect but the video stream will freeze and the bitrate will drop to around 200Kbps from its original 6000Kbps, cant believe that issue still exists! Restarting the software resolves the issue. This issue does not happen when streaming to a mobile device via wifi so must be the slingplayer software. I have experienced this issue in Vista 32 and 64 editions.
A new problem has arisen since I last used the software, jerky images! Very irritating! now this doesnt happen all the time, and when it does happen a simple restart of the software or pressing standby on the remote resolves it (mostly), but overall the performance has not improved in the update since I last setup the V+ box with. For fairness, I have tried the setup with a Sky HD box as well and get the same performance issues so we can rule out equipment/providers as the issue.
Hope this update is useful in helping make a decision about the slingbox Solo, hopefully Sling will identify and resolve these issues soon.

Hi AppNewsGuy
If your V+ is in a different room to your router then your best to pickup a pair of homeplugs )approx £50 a pair these days), this will allow you to hook up a network through your home power cables up to 100/200Mbps. There is a wireless option but for performance vs price, homeplug wins in my opinion.
Its pretty easy to setup but your right in saying there is that extra cost in getting setup in the first place.
Shout me if you need any help with your connection.

Hi, i've been trying to use the settings above to set up my v+ with the slingbox classic but cannot get picture. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Hi Ciaran
The slingbox classic only has scart as far as i remember so you will need to follow the above setup but trade Component video cables for scar and make sure the V+ box is set to 4:3 or widescreen mode depending on the aspect of your TV.
The component video cables will only give higher resoloution compared to Scart connections with the Solo Slingbox.
Hope this helps but any other queries then drop me a line. Probably best that I strat a Virgin Media specific thread that covers all boxes :-)

Thanks for that weesteev,
I'll give it a try and report back. I think i may have to invest in an upgrade of my slingbox as it seems silly to have a HD box but not experience it in full.

Stephen,
Just to understand what you did, but did you originally install the U.K slingplayer desktop software (1.5.1), pick the virgin V+ box from the software remote options, and then just install the U.S 2.0 slingplayer software over the 1.5.1 software without losing any usability with the virgin remote and without having any other issues? Since 1.5.1 is the current software for U.K customers, I was wondering if 2.0 created any problems with the U.K solo, but it sounds like you're not experiencing any issues worth mentioning.
Just to recap my situation. I will be installing a slingbox solo that will be purchased in the U.K this July using component cables connected to a Virgin V+ Box and will be using the whole setup remotely sending the stream to the U.S connected to a slingcatcher. I just wanted to know if I'd have screwed anything up by installing the 2.0 software over the 1.5.1 U.K software.
Also, this may be a general question to anyone out there, but I'll be taking my laptop with me to the U.K with a dual boot of windows 7 beta and vista. I installed the 1.5.1 software on windows 7 without any issues, but I've kept the dual boot setup in case I need to use Vista if the slingbox software has a problem with windows 7 for some reason. Is anyone using the windows 7 beta and have installed and ran the slingbox software both 1.5.1 and 2.0 without any issues?
LTM spot on!
The v2 software was installed over the 1.5.1 after i had all the settings in place. If you install v2 straight away then there is no remote control for Virgin Media at all, just a generic PVR remote. So transition from 1.5.1 to 2 will give you the remote control for the V+ but no other noticeable benefits.
Your setup will be identical to mine yous hould experience any real issues with the player, its only remote access via Blackberry (over a 3g network) that seem to be causing me issues. Wireless access works perfectly. I have tested my slingbox connected from New York and The Maldives with great success. Sometimes the player will freeze up and lose picture but a quick restart of the software solves that.
Hope this helps!
p.s. I have run the v2 software succesfully with Windows 7 x64 and Vista Ultimate x64 with no real issues so you should be ok to run it in either.

It sure does. Thank you sir for all your input. I just wanted to get reassurance from someone that's been there and done that. You learn as you go along and you stumble across info here and there on what you can and can't do. I was originally going to get the slingbox solo here in the states and bring it over with me, but the firmware between the U.K and the U.S models are different, so I wasn't going to take any chances with not having access to the Virgin V+ remote through the slingcatcher. I also originally was going to hookup the V+ Box through HDMI for the LCD TV and composite for the slingbox since it was only going to be used remotely, but finding out that Virgin turns off those connections when hooked up through HDMI pushed me towards the Solo and using the component pass through. Anyway, that takes care of a few answers that I wasn't 100% sure of. Thanks for the fast response and all your help.
Regards
Lee
I have added an update to the main text body with details of the updated UK slingplayer software. Give me a shout if you need any help with setup or config as usual

Weesteev must have quit monitoring this thread, so since it's been a while I'll answer my own question. After arriving in the U.K and installing the slingbox solo to the virgin V+ box using component cables, the picture on the LCD Sony using the component bypass is fine and not much of a compromise compared to hdmi. The only issue I encountered was with using the older 1.5 Slingplayer software version using remote mode; it wouldn't connect. I liked the easier access to fav channels on 1.5 rather than how slingmedia have set how you access fav channels on ver 2.0. Didn't have a choice using 1.5 now, because after upgrading the slingplayer software, it connected no problem. My only further complaint has nothing to do with sling; just dealing with the fact that virgin media can provide a decent 20MB's download and a pathetic 768kbps upload. ( can't get the 50mb service in my area ). The picture is decent enough on my pc at this upload speed, but heard the picture might suffer using it with a slingcatcher connected to the TV in the U.S. We'll see when I get back.
Anyway, for those that are going to use a slingbox solo with virgin media broadband and stream it to the U.S, I can say that the component cable bypass works fine for picture quality on a 32 inch sony lcd and the Virgin broadband service is pretty stable for streaming video, so you should have no problem enjoying your U.K tv in the U.S. Anything comes up with the slingcatcher U.S connecting to a U.K slingbox solo, I'll add to the thread.

Hi Stephen / Weesteev
Hopefully you are still monitoring this thread. I've been reading a lot about users having picture quality issues on their TV when they use the component bypass. In other words, the quality of the picture is degraded when using component bypass going from the slingbox solo to the TV. I was just wondering how your component picture quality was on your TV using this bypass and if you've compared it with the HDMI connection. I'm heading to the U.K on Thursday, have just ordered my slingbox solo U.K version to be delivered sometime next week, have the V+ box already installed in the U.K and just need to hook it up to a Sony 1080i TV, but after reading about more than a few people unhappy about the picture they seem to be getting from the bypass, I'm a little concerned. I'm actually thinking of how to do a bypass to the bypass. If I went directly from the V+ box using the component cable to the TV that would solve the TV picture issue, but on the back of the Solo are only s-video and composite connections while the V+ box only has a scart connection to work with, so if I wanted to avoid going component as a bypass and it turns out that the picture quality coming from the solo bypass component to the TV stinks, how else would it be possible to setup the slingbox solo to the V+ box?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
LTM
Okay, a bit premature on posting because I've been frantically searching google and came across a website posting from someone that has a U.K solo and saw based on his post that sling supplies a scart adapter plug for the composite connection, therefore if I do encounter a component quality bypass issue, then I can still use the composite from the scart connection. I'll be using the slingbox only in remote mode, so the picture quality using the composite connection, I hope, won't be as crucial with a virgin media broadband upload of 768Kps to the U.S and should still serve my needs. Anything on the above that I might have wrong or anything you could add to the above?
Thanks!!
Hi there,
Just came across this thread while looking for a way to resolve stuttering audio...
I have a Virgin V+, here in the UK, connected to a SCART splitter. In the splitter, I have an SCART to Composite converter and run a Composite lead to the US bought SlingBox Pro HD.
I can control the V+ box without any problem although it is a little slow .. but I am hearing stuttering audio and when comparing TV on the Slingplayer with Tv on the TV, the delay becomes huge between what is transmitted on the TV and what is on the PC.
I am hoping that I just need to tweak the settings of the Slingbox.
We are hoping to be able to view UK TV in Florida.
Allan
Hi, could you send a link to the cables that i will require to connect the V+ box to the slingbox for the picture and all its features to work properley
Thank you
Hi Dave
Any componenent HD video cable will do the business, remember you need 2x video and 2x audio cables for the full passthrough feature to work if you want this to stream over the web and broadcast on your TV at the same time.
Video cable - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisual-Component-Video-Cable-Install/dp/B000WTJVL8/re...
Audio Cable - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisual-Install-Phono-Cable-1m/dp/B0013LRJWC/ref=pd_bx...
Hope this helps, give me a shout if you need any assistance!

Does it make a difference if i bought the 'Slingbox PRO-HD' over the 'Solo' or would it still be the same set up with a V+ as has been described?
I'd say it would be the same setup since the Pro-HD has both component in and a bypass component out connection to the TV; the same as the solo. I'm assuming you'd probably also have to use the U.K slingplayer software in order to setup the Virgin V+ virtual remote codes to get the V+ box working with the slingbox.
Hi everyone,
My question is exactly the same as Dave13's a few posts up. The TV my Slingbox SOLO is connected to isn't HD so I was wondering whether that would make a difference. Currently, I can watch TV and control everything remotely but cannot see the menus. At the same time, the TV retains full functionality for everybody watching in the room (they can see menus).
Thanks in advance for your help.
