This is probably a really stupid question, but I am new to SlingBox.

I have Frontier DSL with a dynamic IP, Speedstream modem, and Linksys wireless router.

I have my home network set up and can view the Slingbox within my home network.

HOWEVER, it cannot be set up for remote viewing.

Do I absolutely need a static IP address for remote viewing? Frontier does offer static IPs for an extra cost, but is there a work around for those of us with dynamic IPs?

No, you don't. That's what your FinderID and the SlingFinder service are for. Your IP is reported to SlingMedia's servers. When you attempt to connect, SlingPlayer looks up your FinderID and current IP at SlingMedia. Whenever your IP changes, the servers at Sling are notified.

If you are having problems setting up remote connections (have you tried it), it's probably because the Speedstream modem is also set up as a router. One thing you can do is have Frontier put the modem in "Bridge" mode. That would be the easiest and best. They should be able to do that for you.

I have tried to set up remote viewing. I entered the port forwarding settings as instructed in the SlingBox FAQ section.

Is there something I need to do to double check the Finder ID and SlingFinder service?

If the modem is put into "Bridge" mode, will that screw up other settings or services?

Putting the modem into bridge mode, will not affect anything.

Here's something for you: See what the WAN IP is on your Linksys. If it begins with something like 10.0, 192.x, 127.x, or 169.x, then your DSL modem is acting as a router.

Bridge mode is best and like I say, your DSL provider should be able to do that.

If you are comfortable going into the DSL modem yourself, you might be able to figure out how to do that.

OK! I can get into the modem...but when I put the modem into "Bridge" mode, I lose connectivity to the internet. I have to restart the modem and clear the settings to get back online. Any ideas? It appears to be some sort of PPP setting.

OK. What you need to do then is set your Linksys router up to connect via PPPoE with the username and password you probably got from your ISP. So right now, the modem is doing all the connection login and so forth. You need to make the router do that when in bridge mode.

There is an alternative method that will also work. If you go into the modem's settings you should be able to set up a DMZ host. Put the WAN address of the Linksys router into this and enable it. What this will do then is direct all internet traffic w/o any firewalling to the Linksys. You then can control the portforwards and so forth from the Linksys. Since you are able to get into the modem, that then might be easiest for you, particularly if you don't know your username and passowrd for the PPPoE login.
