Hotels do it differently Everyone can hook up but at that point you need a password to get anywhere. You can do the same thing with some routers but it is probably not worth it.
I would recommend you just give them the password and then change it when they leave. But, if these people are your friends and if you can't trust your friends.... :)

As you may know. I have a couple of Sling catchers running quite well now (since the .41 firmware upgrade) on my 802.11N network. This situations came out over the weekend. When people wanted to conect to my catchers to play their music collections from their laptops though my stereo system.
My situation is. How can I setup a seperate WIFI security password for guests to use my catchers on my WIFI network? Or is there some other procedure I can follow.
I guess I could put their LAPTOP addresses into the routers MAC table. This is lots of work.
But I'm looking for something more simple then that. Almost automatic if possible.
How do Hotels do this sort of thing?
Any of you network GURU's have a suggestion?
Thank You
Trust your friends. But you don't know about Friends of friends Hee Hee.
Or what do they say Keep your friends close but your enimies closer. BC, I think you know I have 5 WIFI bridges too. SO I have to then bring my Laptop to each WIFI bridge to change password. I have to use Cat5 cable to each bridge. They don't let you do remotely. Real pain.
I was hoping maybe. Some how use a second router or something....................
I have a second router hear collecting dust on the floor. Thought maybe I could use it.
What is a VPN? Could that somehow work?
You could use a router configured as an access point and disconnect it when it's not being used.
Slinging Tivo HD, Tivo S2, and OTA from a Pro HD, Tivo HD from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, and Humax DRT800 from a Classic to iPhone, Dell Inspiron 1520 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Mi-Connection cable with 2Mbps upload.
To be a little more specific, you'll set up a router as an access point, with a different SSID and security key. And just unplug it or disconnect the uplink when you don't want anyone to be able to use it..

Thankyou,
I was just reading these instructions.

two-routers-wired.html
I'm not quite sure how I do this without having to run a CAT5 cavle all the way from one router to the other.
Both routers are Wireless.
If you know of any instructions for 2 Linksys wrt300n routers without having to use cat5 cable to interconnect both routers.. Please pass them along.
But. I'm going to go though a trial run using just a 6 foot cat5 cable and see what happens.
Thanks
You don't need much separation between the routers. Just put the second router next to the first, but here's what you must do:
1.) Disable the DHCP server on the second router. You can only have one on your network and the first router is doing this.
2.) Assign the second router a fixed LAN IP from the same subnet as the first router (any unused address is fine - but one outside your DHCP pool).
3.) Hook the second router to the first via a LAN port - Do NOT use the WAN port on the second router.
4.) Configure the second router's wireless SSID to be open w/o any passwords, etc.
5.) No need to disconnect. Just when not using it, log into the second router and turn the radio off.

Thank you Wow! very easy.
Learn something new everyday.
But if I want still some security. Do I name the SSID some other name and use some other password? Or will this not work? Do SSID and password have to be the same as the Router connected to the internet? Which defeat purpose anyway.
Because if I keep SSID open. People driving by may still connect??
Thanks again.
NA9D,
We get working in all of 5 minutes. (Well maybe 8 hour to get answer)hah hah Boy! You take maybe 5 pages of stuff and turn it into 6 easy sentences.
Wish I knew this Friday. Boy all computer geeks come to my house. Telling my I have to do all complicated stuff and may not work. Anyway
NA9D. You sure know your stuff. Thankyou
We now know how to make router into access point or switch
To turn into 4 port switch. All you have to do is turn off radio.
too.
No problem. As for the SSID and password - it can be completely different and should be on the second router. Also, make sure the channels are spaced well apart. For example, if you use channel 6 on the first router, you'll need to use channel 1 or channel 11 on the second to prevent channel overlap.

yes, Default channel on AP router was not the same channel 6 where Internet router was channel 11. I think we had to change to channel 11 when we installed the WIFI bridge Boxes. Becuase the WIFI bridge boxes FW only saw channel 11. Anyway. This is what Linkysys told us to do.
Thank you
NA9D,
Thanks again.
Here is additional notes:
These may only have to do with Linksys not sure.
I also had to Disable NAT and Dynamic Routing (RIP) under advanced routing options on the AP router to be able to get though to the internet.
I also port forward on AP router 5001 for SlingBox too. Not sure if this was required or not.
Also under administration. You will have to enable remote management. Otherwise because of the new IP. You will not be able to access the router from the desktop to turn on and off the RF Radio when you do not wish anyone to use the AP.
Everything still working great.
Right now I have the 64 bit laptop upstairs connected to the second access point via WIFI on batteries projecting or is the correct turm slinging.. Sling to the A/V amp in the living room. It's been running for 45 minutes now on battery without problem.
You what would really be great now is. If somone comes over. All I would have to do is give them a USB key drive with the catcher program on it without having them install anything. But I guess they need to install the sound driver.
Maybe a job for LINUX..............
Sysops, I guess you could mark is as answered. Been working great now.
If anyone needs help setting this up. PM me. It's very easy to do with LINKSYS wifi routers. Not sure about Belkin and others.

You are the one who can choose "Mark as answered" on a post."
