OK Sling, talk to the guys at Palm and get to work on SlingPlayer Mobile for Pre.  I have a Prepism, but I won't upgrade without my Sling.

I would imagine you will see a Android SPM before a Palm Pre one. The Palm Pre doesn't even exist for almost 6 more months and I can't imagine it will obtain a very large market share compared to most other phones.

I concur with the OP, let's get crackin on the Pre slingsoftware. I think this lil baby's gonna throw the smartphone market on it's head.

Indeed! Finally Sprint will have 1 decent phone in their lineup....the only thing it needs now?

Slingplayer.

Sling, please start working on it now! And take advantage of the screen size (480X320) This device is going to do surprisingly well (just a hunch)

Seriously, it's about time Palm came out with this new OS. I would hope that Sling writes a mobile player early, because I still don't see huge numbers of people willing to give up their Verizon or Sprint service, just to get an iPhone from ATT. This phone might be the answer to all of the diehard Treo fans and non-lemmings.

PMac: Agreed 100%. My main reason for disliking my Sprint service is that they have the worst phone selection. I have refused to upgrade so that I could get out of my contract on most of my lines because I was ready to jump ship. Now? I may just hold out a little longer. On a side note, if I ended up switching, I would end up paying 3 times as much for the exact same services on another carrier.

Unfortunately, I won't be buying until Sling gets a player ready to go. I use several sling boxes for my job, and I can't go without it. Therefore, the trusty Treo700p stays until Palm and Sling have brunch together.

You could do what I did: I moved from a Treo 700p to a BlackBerry and got the addon that lets you use the BlackBerry as a modem.  I paired the Treo and the BlackBerry and set up a Bluetooth DUN connection on the Treo, so now when I want to watch my Slingbox, the Treo does the display, while the BlackBerry does the networking.  Works very well -- I have far fewer dropouts then I did when the Treo did it all and the battery life is much better too.

The SDK isn't available yet and the phone does not exist.  I'm sure Sling is working their butts off on this one.  :)

That is an option, however, it wouldn't be practical for me.  I already carry 2 devices and adding a 3rd would be highly impractical. In addition, I have Unlimited Data, and if I added a Crackberry, it would add 40 bucks onto my plan.  No thanks.

I appreciate the input, though.  Laughing

Yes, please get to work on this.  The Pre will change the smartphone market and Sling should be there from the beginning.  I am giving up my WM Mogul for a Pre and I'm sure many others will be doing the same.

Come on Sling, do the right thing here.

January 15, 2009 1:53 PM

knowing Sling's history with mobile development it is probably gonna be at least a year after the phones release until a Sling Player is released. Itll be roughly a year between the Iphone SDK and its Slingplayer. Android has been out a few months and there has been no known progress on Android. The Blackberry release took a long time.

I think our one possible hope for a quick release is the sling.com player. We know they are developing one for Safari which is based on Webkit. Hopefully its possible to port that player over to the Pre(since its native aps are web based anyway) relatively quickly. Somehow I doubt that is possible though. I bet its a lot more complicated than that.

I'm still not sure what people expect them to do with the Pre. The WebOS SDK isn't available. How are they suppose to start working on it? Plus, until there is a big enough Sling owner to Pre owner ratio, I would certainly hope they don't waste resources on it.

January 22, 2009 7:31 AM

"Waste resources"? Is there some shortage of code writers out there that I'm not aware of? They have already produced a half dozen versions of this thing--they aren't reinventing the wheel. If sixteen year olds are capable of cracking every program that hits the market, I'm sure the Sling developers will have no problem producing this from an already established template.

January 22, 2009 9:58 AM

While there isn't a shortage of code writers out there Sling has a limited budget. They have a limited set of code writers available to them. Based on there previous development times it seems they probably only have enough writers to do one new OS at a time. Right now its the Iphone. It is logical to asume the next OS they focus on would be Android. They are also probably working on updates to the other mobile clients. Its also not going to be a simple port since they are going to have to write it in web languages and it costs money to focus resources towards a mobile client. They need to make sure they will make money with it.

Whilst it is true that the SDK hasn't been released Palm did announce a number of partners at CES and the implication was that there would be third party applications ready to go at launch - Dataviz Documents to Go for instance. So it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that Sling could work on this now if they talked to Palm.

The other issue is whether Sling would be able to create a player in WebOS without access to the underlying software and hardware. Palm did also indicate that they would let some developers get access if it was necessary to do so.

In theory at least, Palm intends to be a lot more open and less prescriptive than Apple about what applications can go on to the Pre and about allowing access to the base software and hardware and so Sling ought to be able to come up with a solution more quickly than on the iPhone

I'm pretty sure Palm picked who they would partner with.  Thus, you see Dataviz who Palm has had a relationship with for years.

And Palm's been partnered with Sling before. As a geeky consumer fired up about the Pre, I do hope they're working together on this. Unfortunately Sling's mobile dev cycle is slow for those of us waiting... For example, the Blackberry Slingplayer and the original Palm OS app both took about a year to get out the door.

EDIT: Just read MZ's post. Bummer. I was hopeful these guys were at least speaking. Oh well, I'll get the Pre and watch MobiTV which is included in the $99 all-you-can-eat package, anyway.
