Sean, after recieving your reply and I thank you for it I called slingmedia.com and they said yes it supports closed caption. Before posting I searched this forum and not finding a clear answer I should have called them before I posted. jim_joh

Thanks for bringing this up jim. CC support was put in a during an upgrade to 2.0, and it got overshadowed by other things at the time it was released. I'll make a note in the FAQ that SlingPlayer does now indeed support closed captions.

I use the CC from my Tivo box. If your DVR supports it, then your sling stream will show it as well. Unless you're using a COAX connection that is.

Matt, How would a Solo be able to get the CC signal? That's not transmitted over the Component or Composite connections right? Only COAX I thought.

Closed captioning is carried in the video signal of ATSC and NTSC programming, which is maintained in composite, S-Video, component, and other video connections.

From the wikipedia:

"For all types of NTSC programming, captions are "encoded" into Line 21 of the vertical blanking interval - a part of the TV picture that sits just above the visible portion and is usually unseen. For ATSC (digital television) programming, three streams are encoded in the video: two are backward compatible Line 21 captions, and the third is a set of up to 63 additional caption streams encoded in EIA-708 format."

umm, what about the Catcher? Is there a way to show CC on it?

June 12, 2009 11:42 AM

Good question. I'm not sure if SlingCatcher can display Closed Captioning at this time (never looked, and have never been asked). I'll see if I can find out for you.

Actually now that I think about it, the Catcher really doesn't need a CC decoder. It's hooked up to a TV, which would handle that. As long as the Catcher can pass CC information in the video, then all you'd need to do is engage closed captioning on your TV.

What about USB videos? I've Ripped my entire collection with the CC tracks (I have difficulty hearing), and yet the Catcher doesn't seem to recognize the CC features. Is there a way to enable this?

Also, it MIGHT be nice if the catcher could support ISO files since they can be compressed.

Yeah ISO support would be best in my book. Love to see it at the top of the list.

I know this thread is old, but I do not seem to be able to get closed captions to work on my slingcatcher. I am using HDMI and streaming from a slingbox solo.

It doesn't work with the slingcatcher. Sorry.
