Slingbox has worked fine for 4 years....but, i didn't need the IR setup.....I was able to just feed the cable from the wall into the slingbox and receive the 80 some odd channels.....in china and now i am residing in germany....slingbox home base is in california...

but,

Comcast has now cut the bandwidth in half and so now have only 30 some odd channels.....to get the full 80+ channels they sent a DVA box(i think it is called).... now of course i can only see one channel (channel 3) and whatever the DVA station is set for.   My kid is at the homebase of the slingbox and has connected up the IR cable......so now i am looking to get the IR to respond to my remote control here in germany......

what are my next steps?

paperwork says that when installing the slingplayer software the setup wizard attempts to communicate with the device using the IR control cable.  The kid has sent me a picture of the IR cables setup on the DVA box and it seems OK to me.  We know the code to the DVA box is 911.

does my kid have to setup a new "slingplayer launch" file on the desktop computer which is connected to the slingbox home network?  can she get this file setup from off the slingmedia.com "downloads" tab?  and if so will the setup wizard automatically sense the IR cable in the jack and respond accodingly and peform some IR setups?

any other tips i would appreciate....i am hoping that if she can get the IR setup to work at the home base on the desktop, which is connected to the same network, then i will automatically be able to use my computer's virtual remote control here in germany to control the DVA in california....... is this a reasonable assumption?

thnx

Have you run the setup assistant and configured the video source you have the box connected to.

Slinging Tivo HD, Tivo S2, and OTA from a Pro HD, Tivo HD from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, and Humax DRT800 from a Classic to iPhone, Dell Inspiron 1520 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Mi-Connection cable with 2Mbps upload.

not sure where u are taking me.....  i assume setup assistant is the same as going to slingmedia.com and downloading the setup for slingbox.   This is what my kid did at the slingbox's home network on the home's desktop computer

the video source works like i said ....i can receive in germany, at this very moment, the video from california, but cannot control the video source's (i.e. DVA box provide by Comcast) IR from germany (the only thing my virtual remote in germany controls is the slingbox's channels themselves which does not require IR).......also for that matter my kid cannot control the DVA's IR from the slingbox base network in california.   The setup doesn't appear to even inquire about the IR setup potential......

my apologies if i just don't understand what u are suggesting me to do....

i was assuming that downloading from slingmedia.com a "slingplayer launch" setup onto the desktop i have at home which is connected to the the slingbox network directly, that the setup would sense that the IR cable was inserted into the slingbox and would then provide the opportunity to configure the video source with the control code 991, but apparently it did not.

There is a setup wizard in the player itself. When you (or your kid from what you say) originally set up the SlingBox he/she told it that it was connected directly to cable with no external box. They need to tell it now that you're controlling an external box through a specific input.

From the PC player, click on settings, setup assistant, configure video sources.

You can actually do it yourself from where you're at or they can do it there.
