Hello fellow slingers..I was about to ask a question on why I couldn't connect to my slingbox, but I just figured it out!! so I thought I posted it anyway, in case anyone else runs into this same problem.

I recently purchased a Slingbox SOLO from woot.com. The product arrived in a plain brown box with no instructions other than to go to slingmedia.com and follow their online setup guide.

The "setup assistant" (if you can call it that) couldn't seem to find my slingbox.

  • The networking light was on.
  • I can see from my router that the slingbox is getting an IP.
  • I can ping said IP and get a response.
  • I can port scan said IP and see that port 5001 is open.
  • I can telnet to port 5001 and get a response (blank screen).
  • I rebooted/reset everything several times.

I'm an IT professional by trade and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong since the box itself was responding to the various items above.

I ended up going into the configuration, manually adding the sling box, using the IP given to it by my router, and the default port 5000. I used the default name, and for the password, I used "admin" - Everything I had read thus far said that after you reset the the box (holding the reset button for 5 sec) was supposed to wipe out the password so it was blank. Not in my case!

I hope this helps someone!

What's the warranty on it? If you can't do a reset it could cause problems in the future. Woot generally just gives a refund though don't they?

Slinging Tivo HD, Tivo S2, and OTA from a Pro HD, Tivo HD from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, and Humax DRT800 from a Classic to iPhone, Dell Inspiron 1520 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Mi-Connection cable with 2Mbps upload.
