I want to allow access to my brother in Vancouver (I'm in Scotland) to my Slingbox.

How do I set that up? He obviously needs the Slingplayer but what does he need to do to find my slingbox?

Yeah just give him the finder ID and password and away he goes.

Thanks - speeds are very poor though. My upload is above 500kbps and his download is over 2mbps (both actual rather than claimed) - he's getting 70kbps (ie useless) for the Slingbox stream. What should we be looking for? Tracert?

Have you done a Speedtest to Vancouver?

www.speedtest.net

From Scotland to Vancouver and from Vancouver to Scotland

OK - I get 290kbps to Vancouver (6.5Mbps download) - is that going to be any good?

I think it needs to be faster. Can you switch your ISP to a faster uploader (such as the excellent  Be Broadband)?

I don't think Be is available up here in the Highlands. I know the A in ADSL is for asymmetric - but the balance of mine seems to be well towards the download (20:1) - why is that?

that is normal with adsl providers.  But you really need to have a 2mb upload to help get across the continents.

Upload speed is the key.

By Example : My Sling is connected to a 256K (UP) - 4MBPS (DL) in Eastern Belgium, In North of Belgium he gets only 160Kbps remaining ...

All is speed issues and computer specs.

Nope - can't get Be...joys of living in the UK's most northerly city

Tbh, I don't know! I think it needs a more 'techy' person than me to answer that! But I think you're right about Be being unavailable in the Highlands: I'd assumed you were in an urban area. Can you get satellite broadband instead?

i am in an urban area - a "city" in fact - Inverness - and I can see the exchange. The Upload speed though is poor - especially relative to the download. The speed tests I do seem to bear this out suggesting I have good download and poor upload.

Oh, sorry! I read another remark after I'd posted where you talked about living in the most Northerly city, & forgetting my (limited) memory of Scottish geography, I was thinking you were talking about Aberdeen!! Will try to find some information for you, but have to log off now. But if you've got any other questions, I'll try to answer them early-ish next week. Take care. :)

Although it's not brilliant compared to most of the people slinging from the US I don't think it's that ususual for UK based Slingboxes.  I'm Slinging from the UK at around 300 and a bit and the picture is VHS quality ish.  It depends what you are expecting.   Before I has ADSL Max I had a fixed service and my upload was under 200, technically less than Sling says actually works, and it was OK.  (OK meaning just OK!)

The picture is jumping and sound breaking up - the rate at the other end is around 70kbps despite his normal measured download speed being over 2mbps - gaining latency somewhere...

Do you run something that can use Upload (Torrents by example)?

Mmm.. Is your Slingbox the only thing that's going upstream?

(Beat me to it!)

July 6, 2009 1:45 PM

Yup - as far as I know Slingbox is the only Upstream app. running

July 6, 2009 1:46 PM

It's weird soo... Your computer don't stream anything? (Antivirus Scan).
Or at Vancouver, if it's the only DL thing inside...

I'm sure the answer is "yes" but does brother wait a while for the two ends to optimise? It can sometimes take a bit of time to build up to maximum at these speeds.
