I'm planning to take my sling catcher to my house in Costa Rica to stream me some hockey games. Before leaving i tested the setup on my home net and a remote network.

What i have:

  • Slingbox Solo (purchased this week).
  • SlingCatcher (purchased this week).
  • D-Link DIR-625 routers on both sides.

ISP info:

Oricom.ca (Bell reseller basically),  UP:600 Kbps / DOWN:1.3 Mbps. Both home and remote testing locations are on the exact same ISP and speed rating. Tested it with speedtest.net.

Setup:

Bell ExpressVU --> SlingBox --> DIR-625(fwd:5001) ------- Oricom.ca dsl (600 Kbps up) --> DIR-625(fwd:5001) ->SlingCatcher + SlingPlayer 2.0 on PC

Result & Problem:

Hooked up everything at home and tested it on my home local net with slingplayer 2.0 on my laptop. Everything works perfectly at home. I then activated remote viewing on the box and went to another house to test it. Upon powering up, the catcher checked for updates and downloaded one. This alone shows the box has access to the internet. Connected the catcher to my slingaccount/box and started streaming. Everything was working well for about 2 min then BAM! the image froze. After rebooting the catcher, it was never able to connect to the box again (blabla due to network error). The catcher still has access to the internet. I can still connect to my sling account and check for updates. Tried factory reset, slingaccount connect/disconnet, rebooted router/modem.

After unsuccesful attempts, i tried using slingplayer 2.0.4 on my remote net(same net as the catcher) to see if it works. I connect to the box, it starts streaming then after 15 seconds of video the player crashes and shutsdown. Always after 15 sec of video it crashes. I tried reinstalling it but nothing. I used Logmein to double check if box was still working and it does. the slingplayer over at home works np. I did some more speed tests and realized my home ISP up speed was sometime fluctuating in ranges from 50-250 kpbs. I concluded with the tech support guy that it would be a potential cause for everything however, would slower upload speed CRASH slingplayer/catcher and prevent any connection to the box from a catcher?

To summarize:

  • Slingbox and player works perfectly on home net.
  • SlingCatcher updated itself, connected and started streaming for about 2 min before stopping and never reconnecting to the box again
  • SlingPlayer (2.0.4) on remote net always crashes after exactly 15 sec of streaming.

What i would like to know:

  • Anyone else is using my ISP and having problems ?
  • Anyone else having same SlingPlayer 2.0.4 crashes ?
  • Can slow upload speed prevent completely connection to a box from the catcher ? I'm assuming it wolud only give out shitty video and not connection problems.

Maxwellhouse,
My guess ifs that it is caused by the poor uploads speeds and consistency. If you can't get 1,000Kbps up consistently you will probably keep having these issues.

  • When asking for setup help please include whether you are using a PC or Mac and
  • if you are using the Standalone Slingplayer or the web based setup program.
