I'm going to try something new

I've been struggling to maintain this blog because I have more than one. So, in the interests of finally tackling the commitment, I'm going to consolidate and blog one time only. So, you'll get sci-fi news here but you'll also be subjected to some more of the mundane ramblings of my earthly life. August has been a particularlly rough month for the sci-fi fans out there. The Dresden Files has, in fact, been axed. It wasn't what I'd call the strongest show out there but at the very least, it did have promise. The recent verdict is in on another sci-fi show Painkiller Jane , sorry folks, it's gone too. Not that I'm all *that* sorry as it was really just that bad. Flash Gordon premiered last Friday and didn't impress me much. I moaned to my husband that the dialogue was stilted and he argued, "But that's classic Flash Gordon!" Whatever. This isn't the 60's anymore and if this show is going to make it, it'll have to do better than that. Sadly, with only a 1.5 premiere, I doubt it will. If you're a fan of Eureka , it's doing well, and hopefully will continue to do ...

There's big news for Farscape fans

Although, color me skeptical, I'm not holding my breath. This week Sci-Fi network announced that Farscape will return. Before you start applauding, note the caveat: 10 webisodes and no news on cast and what form this return to Farscape will take except this ... the series will expand the Farscape universe... Translation: spin-off. At least that's what I'm getting out of this. That, and there's no mention of Kemper being involved. So, like anything, I'll take it as it is and judge it when it arrives. It might be good, it might not be, but there is a small part of me wanting to cheer and shout and an even larger part of me hoping that our original Farscape might make its way back onto the screen as a series again. Also, David Duchovony has said that X-Files 2 has a completed script! That's good news, now we have to wait and see if there'll be any solid dates to look forward to. Eureka's return has been enjoyable, although my husband has some concerns over Henry's character and a particular action he took at the end of Phoenix Rising . Harry Potter 7 is almost here. If you're like most ...

A review of Harry Potter film 5

I'm not normally a 'go against the grain' fan. Normally, the majority opinion is how I feel, and not because I'm a conformist, but because I tend to be like a lot of people. But the last three Harry Potter films have been a murky area for me. In Prisoner of Azkaban , I loved the imagery. I loved the ambiance that Curon infused the film with. In many ways, it was entertaining and soothing, peaceful and scary. But it was the first film where I felt the screenplays began to struggle with transitions. In PoA, it was a mild vague feeling. In Goblet of Fire , it was a much stronger feeling, but I had other issues with GoF that it wasn't the issue I felt the most keenly. In GoF, I missed a few key moments (specifically the end where Mrs. Weasley comforts Harry and you get some wonderful character moments). I felt GoF was more 2-D emotionally than the first three films, with more focus on FX and action. Going into Order of the Phoenix , I was geared up. Of all the books, it is my favorite (with six being my least so far). The film ...

Eureka's back on the menu, boys!

After waiting almost a year, the quirky show returns tonight with its season two premiere episode, Phoenix Rising . I had hoped to catch a marathon on the network to refresh my memory but didn't get lucky. Maybe it was on when I was infinitely bogged down in things more important than TV *gasp* (that's almost sacrilege, I know!) Either way, I have a vague memory of the finale in which Carter was married to Alyson and baby was on the way but it wasn't the right future... and everything was reset. So now we are back and I'm excited to spend Tuesday nights again with Carter and co. Also beginning tonight is Tru Calling . I really don't know anything about this show other than Joe Flanigan was in at least some of the episodes (yes, I've got a thing for Joe Flanigan and the awesomeness that is John Sheppard, sorry, it's a girl thing!) but I'll tune in tonight and see what it's about. On my LOTR front, I've finally gotten to Many Meetings in the Fellowship, going slow but every time I sit down to read I wind up nodding off! Darn frustrating, it is. Normally I'm ...

Old Favorites

The last of the in-laws left today and peace and quiet once again reigns in my house... ...that was totally sarcastic. The only peaceful times in my house are the deep, dark depths of night when the four noise machines are fast asleep (thank God, yes, they do sleep well). The embarrassing truth of it is, the moment my husband pulled out of the drive to take my mother-in-law to the airport, I turned to the boys and said gleefully, "Yes! Now we can be lazy again!" We're usually busy, but we're not usually clean and busy. The added pressure of keeping everything picked up and put away while being busy was some stressful work, I tell you. But anyway, old favorites. We all have movies or books that we love, that we go back to time and time again, and that just holding them in our hands makes us smile. For me, my favorite book, and an all time favorite to read at least once a year, is The Lord of the Rings . A while back I bought a trilogy volume. Over the years, I've lost the dust jacket, the bindings come loose and the spine has ...

I think I did die!

Or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Okay, this is getting to be a bad habit, but I swear I'll break it. I jumped at the chance to write this blog and then life threw me a curve ball and the internet and I have had poor relations recently. The good news is, in just under a week all the relatives will be gone, the kids (and their parents!) survived the BIG camping trip, and there's still one month left of summer for me to find some lazy days. Good for catching up on some DVD watching. In the Star Trek universe, I've only managed to watch the original series and The Next Generation in entirety. I saw a handful of DS9 and Voyager, most of Enterprise, and I've always wanted to go back and watch DS9 and Voyager now that they are out on DVD's, so, Netflix, here we come! One show I did spend some time watching before the family descended and I got lost in the avalanche of real life, was Smallville. A while back when I started I mentioned both Supernatural and Smallville and said how I really hadn't watched either one. Well, Supernatural was pretty easy ...
