Every Slinger knows how great it is to catch up on a football game while waiting in an airport, after hours during a business trip, or in the case Wayne Burdick from Illinois, catching a Bears game while waiting for his cruise ship to set sail. What wasn't so great for Wayne, however, was the surprising $27,000 statement from AT&T, his wireless data provider, sent him. Of course, Wayne first assumed there was an error or fraud, so he called AT&T to have the charge investigated and reversed. After being told the charges were legitimate, it turned out Wayne was billed at international roaming rates while using his Slingbox at port in Miami, which at two cents per kilobyte of data over two and a half hours of slinging is a lot of coin. It turns out that Wayne's data card connected through the cruise liners onboard network, which would be billed at international roaming rates. What was unclear is why the onboard cellular network was turned on while in port, as most cruise liners shut down these networks when within range of a land based provider. While many of us attend or host Super Bowl parties (complete with chips, dip, and lots of friends), some of us have other commitments or plans come game day. However, Slingbox owners who can't get in front of a TV can still catch the game on the run. I'm curious who out there happened to do just that. Side Topic: What did you think of Super Bowl XLIII? How do you think it would have turned out if there weren't so many penalties? If you were the Cardinal's head coach, what would you have done differently?

Sling.com Beta Testing Underway

According to an e-mail that found its way into several mailboxes yesterday, Sling Media took a step closer to the launch of the Sling.com online entertainment portal by opening it up to beta testers. "Sling.com is a new online video portal that will give users access to a premier library of content from top TV networks, movie studios, sports leagues and websites. Combining professional programming, editorial expertise and social networking features alongside easy and logical navigation," according to the company. While Sling's e-mail gave no clues as to whether or not Clip+Sling , the long-awaited feature that allows Slingbox owners to clip segments of shows right from their SlingPlayer and share it with others, is included in the early release of the portal. However, Sling Media's relationships with networks and other content providers should offer a bevy of entertainemnt options at launch. Even more interesting is the inclusion of a web-based SlingPlayer, which will let Slingbox owners connect to and control their home television devices without a separate application installed. Not much is known yet about exactly how it works or what the limitations may be, but having a web-based alternative could be a huge convenience for Slingers. It appears...

The drag racer Scott Kalitta died Saturday when his funny car burst into flames, crashed and exploded during qualifying for the N.H.R.A. SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The National Hot Rod Association said the 46-year-old Kalitta, who had 18 career victories and was the 1994 and 1995 top fuel season champion, was taken to the Old Bridge division of Raritan Bay Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Witnesses told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Kalitta’s Toyota Solara was traveling an estimated 300 miles per hour.

Kobe Bryant receives MVP trophy

Kobe Bryant was awarded the MVP trophy from NBA commissioner David Stern in a brief ceremony before Los Angeles faced Utah in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night. The 29-year-old Bryant was a runaway winner of his first MVP award, receiving 82 first-place votes and 1,100 points to far outdistance New Orleans' Chris Paul in the voting of 126 media members. I think he was easily the winner in the MVP contest this year. What do you guys think? Also, speaking of MVP and the playoffs, who do you think will win it all? I am betting on the lakers!

Suns Acquire Shaquille O'Neal

The Phoenix Suns today acquired four-time NBA Champion Shaquille O’Neal from the Miami Heat in exchange for forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks, pending completion of physical examinations by both teams. “We’re thrilled to add a player and person of Shaquille’s quality to our roster,” President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Steve Kerr said. “We believe this addition strengthens our team.
