Release Dates for iPhone player

Back when the iPhone was first announced, this forum was alive with comments from the sling team discussing the possibilities of the platform and the video driven design of the devices. Obviously, some design time was required, and the App Store was not even around yet, so I was patient. Then, in January of this year a glimmer of hope from Sling: http://www.slingcommunity.com/article/26450/SlingPlayer-with-iPhone-and-iPod-... Excerpt: "For 2008, I am certain that we will at least see a beta release of SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone and iPod Touch." Then back in July, a prototype of the sling player for iPhone began popping up all over the place. Online journals like Engadget had links to YouTube videos showing what appeared to be a limited feature but functional iPhone sling player and again the forums were ablaze with the promise of the iPhone. Still the beta was not released and nothing more was spoken of it. Now six months after that, there is still no clear answer from sling about the availability of the player for the iPhone. Whenever someone posts an inquiry in the forums they are immediately shot down with a reference to another obscure posting stating that "it is in...

Windows Installer server could not be accessed." Is anyone familiar with this error and how to fix it so I can download the software. Thanks so much.

Charter Digital Cable Compatibility DVR and DSL

I live in Singapore and thinking about purchasing SlingBox Solo. I will install the SlingBox Solo at my brother’s house in the US. He presently has Charter cable service (expanded basic) and Bell South DSL (1mbps/256kbps). Yea, I know it sucks, but I'm willing to pay to upgrade his end so that I can watch some real football. Hopefully someone can help me with the following questions and concerns: 1. Is 256kbps upload speed suitable? If not, options to upgrade to cable are 5Mbps/384kbps, 10Mbps/1Mbps. Which is recommended? 2. Because Singapore is 12+ hr time difference from the US I will have to purchase a DVR. I've contacted Charter, the cable service provider and asked if their DVR (Motorola 6416 or 3416) is compatible with SlingBox and they never heard of SlingBox. I checked SlingBox list of compatible DVR's but could not find this exact model number. 3. Must I use the cable service providers DVR or can I use another manufactures compatible DVR? Any recommendations? The reason I ask this is, the cable company said in order for another DVR to be compatible with their digital cable service, their cable cards would have to be installed in the DVR....

Sharing SlingBox for Sports Fans

I don't know if it's come up here before, but because there are often questions about buying a slingbox for people in other states to get the sports games there, I was wondering about the creation of a slingbox out-of-town community. It came up because i live in New Jersey but am a Miami Dolphins fan. I don't have people who live in that area that I can buy a slingbox for and I'd rather not pay for the NFL ticket if possible. So could Slingbox Personals be created on this site to find that fan in the maimi area who likes the Jets or Giants and based on some general rules (like don't touch the TV while the game is on) could I sling his Dolphins game and he sling my Jets game? I'm sure there are a lot of things that would need to be worked out, but this is exactly the kind of thing that makes sling so good and worth every penny. What are your thoughts, and is it technically doable?

SlingCommunity is one of the slowest forum web-sites that I visit. Sometimes it is a little slow. Sometimes it isn't even worth browsing because of how slow it is. It is never as fast as other forums that I read. Any idea what is making it so slow? Is it the hosting provider? or the database needs to be trimmed or indexed or something? There aren't a huge number of posts on here. Just wondering why it is so slow.

SlingCommunity July Site Update - New Features and Changes

There are a few updates that have been rolled out with the newest release of our community platform, and I'd like to let you know how to take advantage of them! First of all, you may have seen in the last release that you now have the ability to add your country's flag to your profile. Now, if you'd like to see where everyone else on the site is posting from, you can click on the flag next to anyone's profile. This will bring you to a screen where you can see the flags for all users. Find people who are in your same country or area! You can see an example below. The second change involves the download area of the site. In a previous release, you gained the ability to post multiple discussions to a download. Now, by clicking on the "subscribe to discussions" link within each download, you'll get a notification when new discussions are posted to that download. We'd love to hear your feedback, as always. Keep on enjoying the site! Matt

In our recent upgrade to our platform, we've introduced some great new community features, and I'd like to introduce you to how they work. Rating Content Items First, we've added the ability to rate other content on the site, such as individual forum threads. You'll also be able to see average user ratings for each content item. Go right ahead and start rating your favorite content items, and help other community members find the best stuff! Update And Personalize Your Profile Second, we've upgraded the profile screen, and added the availability of some great custom options. Here's what you'll now be able to do: Add your Twitter username Add your YouTube ID Add your Flickr account All of these will be visible when other community members view your profile. In addition, you'll also be able to select the country you live in , and your country's flag will be proudly displayed next to your avatar! Groups We've also enhanced the Groups section of the site.

Slingers, As many of you have seen, the SlingCommunity has undergone several updates and improvements over the last few months. As we continue to evolve this innovative and original approach to our community software platform, we hope you find many of the changes and enhancements enjoyable and useful. I would also like to say that as we continue to try new ideas, we really value feedback from you, our users. Not all of the changes we've made over the last year have made people do cartwheels and backflips out of pure joy, but we always have our ears perked up to hear your thoughts and make this community work exactly how you want. The vast majority of changes I'll talk about below are inspired by the feedback we've gotten, so please keep those suggestions and calls for improvements coming. So without further adieu, let's get to the updates! This time it's all about the forums and comments, and I (personally) think you'll all love what's new. Single Thread, Single Topic First the biggest change of all... After much feedback, the concept of multi-dimensional forum threads is going away, meaning that threads will no longer be multi-tagged to forum topics. You...

Hey gang! I'm happy to announce that the Sling FAQ area here on SlingCommunity has finally gotten a much needed overhaul! The changes are numerous, but the general gist is that it's been divided out in a way so each FAQ section gets its own comments thread (so you guys and gals can make suggestions on new FAQ additions), a tab has been added to the main nav bar to make it visible, and the new layout will make it much easier to manage from this end so I can make sure it gets updated much more frequently. Plus, everything in it is up to date as of now. Go check it out and make some suggestions for questions that should be included.

Feedback wanted: SlingPlayer Mobile Reviews Area on SlingCommunity

With SlingPlayer Mobile support for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm, and soon Blackberry, there's no doubt Slingbox on the go is becoming an important avenue for folks to enjoy the benefits of TV on the go. In a recent heated forum debate, it became clear that folks are looking for a resource to evaluate, review, and discuss SlingPlayer Mobile on the various mobile devices available, both past and present. Sling Media doesn't provide QA information for every cell phone in existence (whether they should or not isn't the point here), but folks here in the community are certainly running SPM on a huge number of non-listed devices and it seems like SlingCommunity could step up and get your experiences with SPM and a particular device in a place where others can easily find it. My vision here is finding a place here on the site where we could load information for a specific mobile device... like the model number, specs, a photo, carrier if applicable, OS, etc. Then, if you're using SlingPlayer Mobile with that device (or have used it), you can share your experiences with how well it worked, what you thought of it, etc. Was it good? Was it...

My fellow Slingers, As some of you may have discovered, a particular person has recently been sending spam via the private message system... a real person sending out spam messages one by one to certain members. Unreal isn't it? As a response to this, we are going to be implementing new security protocols in the PM system. A system of checks and balances in a way (we're still hammering out the details). The goal is that we will automatically ban people that abuse the PM system. This may also mean that there may be certain criteria a new member has to meet before they can even send a PM to another user (if so, some of you may not be able to send PMs until that criteria is met). Again, still working out the details there, but I wanted to assure all of you that I will not tolerate spammers here at SlingCommunity. With any luck, this new system will be in place on Thursday or Friday. My apologies to all of you that have been affected. Your friend, Matt
