i live in houston, and my parents live in cleveland. i want to watch cleveland sports, but it's not available on any cable or pay per channel service available in houston (insert cleveland joke here). i want to connect a slingbox to a cable outlet in an unused room of my parents' house in cleveland so that they don't even know it's there and don't have to deal with it (they're in their 70's and trying to get them to understand slinging may cause either their or my death). my question: can i install the slingbox solo directly into the cable outlet in that room in cleveland and watch shows in houston, if the slingbox is not connected to either a cable box or a tv (provided it's on the network, of course)?

Will two simultaneous slingboxs streaming off same router affect video quality?

I have a slingbox HD Pro. It's working via cable modem going through a modem. I'm contemplating picking up a second slingbox (probably a solo, AV or classic) for the sole purpose of controling a second cable DVR in the house, to help an senior citizen in the house, record programs on the DVR and play them back. However, I'm concerned that if I've got two slingboxes, both going through the same router off the one cable modem, STREAMING AT THE SAME TIME, I'm going to compromise the quality of my first (and primary Slingbox HD Pro box) when reviewing it remotely from another part of the country. In other words, if I'm watching my slingbox pro HD controlling my home cablebox dvr #1 from across the country, and another familiy member is controlling the second slingbox, hooked up to the second cablebox DVR in the house (but running off the same router and cable modem connection), I'm going to be compromising the quality of the video stream off first box). Is this true? Will I compromise the quality of the streaming if two boxes are being controlled at the same time? Thanks.

Home location - Missouri, USA Speeds: Up-260 kbps Down-600 kbps Remote location - Thailand Speeds: Up-250 kbps Down-400 kbps What are the standard speeds (up for Home location, down for remote location) for decent viewing. I need to upgrade my speeds, especially the upstream from the Home location, but I want to make sure I know what speed will work so I pay for the right service. I'm balancing affordability with functionality. Right now I'm getting slingstream bitrates averaging about 40 kbps and that gives a horrible picture. Thanks for the help. Direwolf

I'm in Thailand, home SlingBox A\V is in Missouri, USA. What are the minimum speeds for a decent picture and sound? I think I need to upgrade both locations, but I wanted to get some feedback from those of you that are successfully using the slingbox. If I'm upgrading internet services I want to make sure I get to the best, yet affordable, speeds. Also, is there a consensus on DSL vs Cable for slingbox purposes? Missing out on the NFL is killing me! Home Speeds: Down-600 kbps Up-260 Remote (Thailand) Speeds: Down-400 Up-200 Direwolf

Slinging from the UK to New York - Verizon Fios

Hey, Hoping someone can help me! I have a classic sling box in the UK with a pretty good upload, I originally had timewarner cable but due to traffic shaping (feed would run fine for about a minute and then freeze, so had to reset slingbox and start again, same problem happens) so i changed to verizon fios, but now its even worse, it streams at only 2kpbs with no picture at all, I can access the settings on the verizon modem/routre, but not change it unfortunately the cable coax goes straight into the device... If anyone can help or advise a way to get around this, hopefully its just a simple problem with the router cause it works fine on Verizon business dsl, but just not on TWC cable internet or Verizon fios.. Thanks, Brendan

Need Help with Slow Remote Stream Speeds with Orange Livebox in France

Dear Forum Members, Hello. I need help solving a slow remote stream speed problem. My Slingbox is in the U.S. with Verizon DSL and the remote stream speeds are fine at multiple locations, but not at my home in France where I have a DSL connection with Orange (Livebox). I call SlingMedia and they verified that there is no problem on the sending side where my Slingbox is located (speeds of 500-600kbps). At my home, I used to be able to achieve (250-350kbps speeds), but in the past 2-3 months my stream speeds are now only 10-40 kbps and needless to say, it is unwatchable. I am not sure what is causing this problem, because I thought the limiting factor was usually the upload speeds on the sending end, not the download speeds on the receiving end. Slingmedia said to contact Orange, which I have done. They provided me with a diagnostic speed test that says my download speed is typically 1.5mbps and is fine, so I don't understand what is causing the problem. I haven't changed anything from my original set up, no firmware upgrades or Slingplayer upgrades, as I have read the problems that they have caused some...

My slingbox worked well until the firmware was upgraded. This caused volatile bit rates where I couldn't even see it anymore for minutes before it would bounce back for a few minutes. Slking media would tell me to restart the router or slingbox, but that wasnt it. A really great guy on here wrote how to change the firmware to the old version sincve sling doesnt support that. Well I took his advice, and my player is working fine now. Everyone here who has that problem shold complain to Slingmedia so they get off their fat asses and fix the problem

Ok, so I have a slingbox pro HD and have it set up at my gfs house hooked up to her direct tv. I set up remote viewing correctly because I can watch it at starbucks, panera bread, my work, etc. I am using port 443 at the moment, and it is forwarded properluy to the IP of the slingbox. Although, I cannot seem to get it to work at my house. Well what happends is that whenever I connect to the sling from my house it does everythingit normally would if I was somewhere else. My gf says the N comes on, and the slingplayer (tried both 1.5 and 2.0) say optimizing. It ends up staying at optimizing for a long time, then she says the N goes away, and it says something like the slingplayer cannot connect to the slingbox. After that happens, the slingbox cannot be accessed from anywhere including my work, panera, starbucks, gfs hosue(where slingbox is) until you power cycle the slingbox, and then it works everywhere but my house. I have confirmed that the ports that I have tried (443, 5001, 6001, etc) are marked as open (canyouseeme) when slinging. Could anyone with this...

Intermittent Connectivity Loss

My Slingbox Pro is on a DSL line with a DLink WBR2310 router. Normally this works fine with a streaming rate of about 525 kbs. But frequently, often in early evening, I cannot connect. The sequence typically is...Locating for 1 second; Connecting for 15 seconds; 1 Pending and then an error message...having trouble, do you want to continue. Doesn't help to tell it to continue. It won't connect in that session. However...and here's the strange part. On subsequent attempts, it will go through the same sequence and then suddenly ask for the Administrator password. I enter that and it just cycles around and asks for it again, and again and again, without ever connecting. After several hours...like the next morning, it connects normally as if nothing ever happened. Do these symptoms ring a bell with anyone? Unfortunately the SB is unattended a long way away, so I don't have an easy way to see if something is happening with the line. Suggestions, theories welcome! RB

Stream freezing solution !

Well I will give a quick overview of my setup and then what I found to be the problem. I am streaming on my LAN. I have a wireless link (1.3 miles) to where my SOLO is located. I am running XP pro SP3. With the old player/firmware I would get 1 maybe 2 freezups each evening. Once I upgraded to 2.0 and the new firmware I would be fine for about 30 - 40 minutes and then the stream would freeze and the only way to get it back was to reboot the PC. After talking to my IT guy at work yesterday he mentioned a problem with the TCP/IP stacks in XP SP3. It appears that Microsoft cut the allowed IP connections down to 10 with the upgrade to SP3. He sent me a program to overwright this and all is now working great. I went all night last night with no freezups at all ! Here is the link to that program..... http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-xp/remove-windows-xp-sp3-tcpip-connec... Hope this will help out some of you guys! Kevin

I want to share my experience with this error so others can enjoy the slingbox from anywhere. I purchase my SlingBox Pro early 2007 for being able to watch my home TV from Japan, where my company sends me ocassionaly. Twice I went to Japan in 07 getting the error 0x8007274c. The first time, I didn't have the SlingBox set up for remote viewing. My second trip to Japan, I had the SlingBox set up for remote viewing, but was not able to watch from the Hotel due to the port being blocked. Everyone back home had no clue as to what I was telling the to do by changing ports of the SlingBox, therefore I had no access for my second trip. Well, this time I got smart and started an account at LogMeIn.com That way, I could access my pc and make changes easily. Once in Japan 10/6/08, I tried the SlingBox again and got the same error. To verify that the port is actually being blocked, I went to Firebind.net There you can check to see what ports are open or closed at the location you are at. Click on Web Client the select the SlingBox port...

If using a Cisco ASA or similar and need to enable Internet Viewing... Create a "Static NAT" rule (Actually two, one for TCP the other for UDP) - Orginal Interface is the Internal Network - Source is the Slingbox IP Address - Translated Interface is "outside" and "Use Interface IP Address" - Use Port Address Translation (PAT) with 5001 as "Original" port and "Translated" - You create two rules because you will need one for TCP PAT and the other for UDP PAT. static (DMZ,outside) udp interface 5001 192.168.1.254 5001 netmask 255.255.255.255 tcp 0 0 udp 0 Ensure you have the proper Access Rules as well... - on the outside interface create a rule to Permit "any" from the "source", Destination should be the "outside" interface, TCP/UDP 5001 for the service. Seems backwards, but that is how Cisco does it. Don't forget to use the following tool to test http://www.yougetsignal.com/
