Connections with structured wiring

I'd like to watch TV while at my computer and I bought the Solo. My house has wiring for ethernet, cable, phone etc. at 4 different points with the main hub in the basement. Right now my computer is connected to the router which is also wireless for around the house. The TV I want to connect to the Solo, in theory, has ethernet going to the hub "backwards" which has another ethernet cable to the computer. Perhaps I need to patch the cable going to the hub (from the TV) directly? to I'm not sure what? - Thanks!

WRT350N or DIR-655

I just got a Slingbox Pro HD and have it currently working with my Linksys WRT54G. I want to upgrade to a draft N router and after searching through the forum, it appears that the only way to get one of my two choices to work is to set it up manually. Since the posts weren't fairly recent and they have new software out, I figured I'd ask. From just router reviews, it appears the D-Link has less problems and has faster throughput. But which one is easier to set up with the Slignbox: Linksys WRT350N or D-Link DIR-655? Thanks, Jeff

Slinging without a TV?

i live in houston, and my parents live in cleveland. i want to watch cleveland sports, but it's not available on any cable or pay per channel service available in houston (insert cleveland joke here). i want to connect a slingbox to a cable outlet in an unused room of my parents' house in cleveland so that they don't even know it's there and don't have to deal with it (they're in their 70's and trying to get them to understand slinging may cause either their or my death). my question: can i install the slingbox solo directly into the cable outlet in that room in cleveland and watch shows in houston, if the slingbox is not connected to either a cable box or a tv (provided it's on the network, of course)?

I am interesting in purchasing a slingbox relatively soon, but I have no clue what to purchase or how to set it up. For starters, I want to be able to have a slingbox network within my household for the office computer downstairs, my laptop upstairs, my TV upstairs (same room as laptop), and the TV in the living room. Our router is located in the office downstairs. I connect to the router wirelessly for my laptop. We also have a digital cable service with Time Warner. (There is a digital cable box in my bedroom upstairs, as well as in the living room.) Basically, how do I get around doing this? What do I need to purchase, and how would I set it up? When multiple devices are connected to the network, do they all have to view the same exact channel? Suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

Will two simultaneous slingboxs streaming off same router affect video quality?

I have a slingbox HD Pro. It's working via cable modem going through a modem. I'm contemplating picking up a second slingbox (probably a solo, AV or classic) for the sole purpose of controling a second cable DVR in the house, to help an senior citizen in the house, record programs on the DVR and play them back. However, I'm concerned that if I've got two slingboxes, both going through the same router off the one cable modem, STREAMING AT THE SAME TIME, I'm going to compromise the quality of my first (and primary Slingbox HD Pro box) when reviewing it remotely from another part of the country. In other words, if I'm watching my slingbox pro HD controlling my home cablebox dvr #1 from across the country, and another familiy member is controlling the second slingbox, hooked up to the second cablebox DVR in the house (but running off the same router and cable modem connection), I'm going to be compromising the quality of the video stream off first box). Is this true? Will I compromise the quality of the streaming if two boxes are being controlled at the same time? Thanks.

When I pooped the CD and downloaded the Slingplayer from the website and try to look for the box it is saying there is no box on the network. I do have the Slingbox plugged into my Linksys SD2008 which is plug and play. This is then in turn plugged into my Linksys RVS4000. All firewalls/anti virus are diabled on my computer I have held the reset but for 30 seconds and a uninstalled and reinstalled the Slingplayer Can anyone please help?

Sling Media, fix your boxes Re: Subnets

I've wonded why someone on another subnet could not connect to a slingbox on a different subnet. I installed a packet analizer on a hub with the Slingbox and this is what I see; 192.168.0.26 = Computer on other subnet 192.168.1.236 = Static IP of Slingbox 192.168.0.26 sends ping request to 192.168.1.236 192.168.1.236 sends an ARP Broadcast message looking for "who has 192.168.0.26" This goes on, over and over. Maybe my networking theory is screwed up but an ARP Broadcast can/should only be sent to machines on the same subnet. The Slingbox has the correct netmask of 255.255.255.0. The only way, I can see this working is if a bridge was used between the subnets but we use routing (routing is the "normal" method to cut down on traffic between subnets). The typical reply to an ARP Broadcast message is for the device to give it's HW address but that is useless information when you get above the data-link layer. Am I screwed up or does Sling Media need to go back to school?

Is there anyway of checking the status of the sling server or servers. I tried to connect to my slingbox via mobile internet connection but got an usual error although i could get on the net. So i thought it might be a speed issue. So I tried my wireless connection at home and connected without any problem. After a lot of head scratching i thought it might be a server issue at sling central. So is there a way of checking the status?

Apologies if this has been discussed 1,000 times but this is driving me nuts. I got my Solo working on my home network but when I tried to set it up for Remote viewing (outside my network) it failed. I've read there are limitations with the Airport Express: My wireless network consists of 2 airport express. The home base connects the ethernet to my Phone / Computer Modem provided by Cablevision. I have a second Airport Express device which acts as a bridge to the base (it works because I use itunes on it all the time). I've connected the ethernet on the bridge to my Solo. I can view the Sling on the home network but I can't figure out how to modify the IP address for my network to allow the proper upload. All the articles discuss modifying the Router. . . I'm not sure if the Airport Express qualifies as a router. Do I need to buy more equipment? Possible the Airport Extreme base? HELP. . . PLEASE. . . thx Mark

Home location - Missouri, USA Speeds: Up-260 kbps Down-600 kbps Remote location - Thailand Speeds: Up-250 kbps Down-400 kbps What are the standard speeds (up for Home location, down for remote location) for decent viewing. I need to upgrade my speeds, especially the upstream from the Home location, but I want to make sure I know what speed will work so I pay for the right service. I'm balancing affordability with functionality. Right now I'm getting slingstream bitrates averaging about 40 kbps and that gives a horrible picture. Thanks for the help. Direwolf

I think I need to upgrade both locations, but I wanted to get some feedback from those of you that are successfully using the slingbox. If I'm upgrading internet services I want to make sure I get to the best, yet affordable, speeds. Also, is there a consensus on DSL vs Cable for slingbox purposes? Missing out on the NFL is killing me! Home Speeds: Down-600 kbps Up-260 Remote (Thailand) Speeds: Down-400 Up-200 Direwolf

Hey, Hoping someone can help me! I have a classic sling box in the UK with a pretty good upload, I originally had timewarner cable but due to traffic shaping (feed would run fine for about a minute and then freeze, so had to reset slingbox and start again, same problem happens) so i changed to verizon fios, but now its even worse, it streams at only 2kpbs with no picture at all, I can access the settings on the verizon modem/routre, but not change it unfortunately the cable coax goes straight into the device... If anyone can help or advise a way to get around this, hopefully its just a simple problem with the router cause it works fine on Verizon business dsl, but just not on TWC cable internet or Verizon fios.. Thanks, Brendan

Need Help with Slow Remote Stream Speeds with Orange Livebox in France

Dear Forum Members, Hello. I need help solving a slow remote stream speed problem. My Slingbox is in the U.S. with Verizon DSL and the remote stream speeds are fine at multiple locations, but not at my home in France where I have a DSL connection with Orange (Livebox). I call SlingMedia and they verified that there is no problem on the sending side where my Slingbox is located (speeds of 500-600kbps). At my home, I used to be able to achieve (250-350kbps speeds), but in the past 2-3 months my stream speeds are now only 10-40 kbps and needless to say, it is unwatchable. I am not sure what is causing this problem, because I thought the limiting factor was usually the upload speeds on the sending end, not the download speeds on the receiving end. Slingmedia said to contact Orange, which I have done. They provided me with a diagnostic speed test that says my download speed is typically 1.5mbps and is fine, so I don't understand what is causing the problem. I haven't changed anything from my original set up, no firmware upgrades or Slingplayer upgrades, as I have read the problems that they have caused some...

I cannot, however, get remote viewing working and assume it is my router setup. Has anybody setup at WRT610N wireless-n router for remote viewing? So far, I have: 1) Correctly setup port forwarding (on both 5001 and then tried 1720 due to other recommendations here). 2) I set up DHCP Reservations for the IP address 3) Turned off SPI Firewall Protection on security and ensured all else is off except Filter IDENT. 4) Upnp is enabled Not sure what else to do. My PCs, PS3, Wii and DirecTV box all connect without any issues. Ideas? Thanks in advance. Gary

This caused volatile bit rates where I couldn't even see it anymore for minutes before it would bounce back for a few minutes. Slking media would tell me to restart the router or slingbox, but that wasnt it. A really great guy on here wrote how to change the firmware to the old version sincve sling doesnt support that. Well I took his advice, and my player is working fine now. Everyone here who has that problem shold complain to Slingmedia so they get off their fat asses and fix the problem

I want to be able to get access to my Irish home channels from a residence in Spain. At that residence I currently have a 1MB connection through Telefonica. Is the 1 MB connection in Spain OK or would I need more bandwidth? I could upgrade it to 3MB. Where is the broadband connection the most important i.e. at the source (for me Ireland) or both?
